CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Headlined by stellar defense and two homers off the bat of Yohandy Morales, fourth-seeded Miami clinched its spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship game with a 7-2 victory over top-seeded Wake Forest Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.
With the win, the Hurricanes advanced to the title game for the first time since 2012 and seek their first ACC title since 2008. Miami will take on third-seeded Clemson in Sunday’s title game after the Tigers eliminated No. 7 seed North Carolina at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park during simultaneous semifinal matchups. First pitch is scheduled for noon on ESPN2.
It will be the seventh time the Hurricanes and Tigers will meet in the ACC Championship, with the most recent matchup in 2018 with Clemson earning a 7-1 victory. The Tigers hold the 4-2 advantage in the tournament.
After striking out in the first inning, Morales finished 3-for-4 with two homers including a ninth-inning inside-the-park home run to put the game out of reach. The third baseman drove in four runs and scored three times, leading the team in both categories.
The Canes used six pitchers on the day and allowed just seven hits, six being singles. Alejandro Rosario (4-6) earned the victory after his 4.2 innings of work with three strikeouts. Andrew Walters, who has appeared in every postseason game thus far, shut the door in the bottom of the ninth.
Miami’s bats totaled 11 hits on the afternoon. Right fielder Zach Levenson finished with two hits, while freshman Blake Cyr added a two-run single in the seventh to make it a 6-2 game.
On the Wake side, first baseman Nick Kurtz tallied two hits and the Demon Deacons’ lone multi-base hit with a ninth-inning double. Bennett Lee recorded a pair of singles.
