Virginia’s Justin McCoy Named ACC Wrestler of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia’s Justin McCoy was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week following his performances last week, Dec. 29-30, at the Midlands Championships.

McCoy posted a sixth-place finish at 174 pounds at the Midlands Championships, placing for the second straight season at the prestigious event.

The graduate student went 4-1 overall and advanced to the semifinals at the Midlands Championships before an injury in his semifinal match forced him to default and medically forfeit the remainder of the tournament.

McCoy posted a 9-2 decision over Michael Squires of Princeton in the opening round and then held off Ceasar Garza, 8-7, in the second round to continue in the championship bracket. After an 11-3 major decision win over Hayden Pummel of Northern Illinois, McCoy defeated No. 16 Brody Conley of West Virginia, 11-6, in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals where he would suffer an injury default loss to No. 13 Philip Conigliaro of Harvard.
