This Week in ACC Field Hockey

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – A ranked matchup between California and Boston College on Friday, October 11, headlines this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey action. A total of seven conference matches are on the docket throughout the weekend, concluding on Sunday, October 13.
 
North Carolina holds on to the No. 1 spot in this week’s NFHCA Coaches Poll and are joined in the top 20 rankings by No. 3 Virginia, No. 10 Boston College, No. 11 Duke, No. 14 Syracuse, and No. 18 Cali.
 
Both Cal and Stanford will travel to the east coast this weekend for a pair of games. Stanford will meet Syracuse on Friday, October 11 at 4 p.m. ET, while Cal will head to Boston College at 5 p.m. ET. Friday will feature two additional ACC matches when Louisville hosts North Carolina at 3 p.m. ET and Wake Forest hosts Duke at 5 p.m. ET. All four matches will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
 
On Sunday, Syracuse will host Cal and Boston College will welcome Stanford with both matches beginning at noon ET on ACCNX. Additionally on Sunday’s slate, Virginia will host No. 8 Saint Joseph’s in a top 10 non-conference matchup, airing at noon ET on ACCNX.
 
After three weeks of conference play, Boston College and North Carolina share the lead in the ACC standings with a pair of 3-0 marks in league play. Overall, North Carolina is off to an 8-0 start to the season, while Boston College is 8-3 throughout the 2024 campaign.

Noting ACC Field Hockey
  • North Carolina holds onto the No. 1 spot in this week’s NFHCA Coaches Poll and are joined in the poll by No. 3 Virginia, No. 10 Boston College, No. 11 Duke, No. 14 Syracuse, and No. 18 California.
  • Cal head coach Shellie Onstead is one win away from her 300th career victory. The Golden Bears' leader is the eighth-winningest active head coach and would be the third active ACC coach to reach the milestone, joining Wake Forest's Jen Averill and Duke's Pam Bustin.
  • North Carolina’s Charly Bruder was named the ACC's Offensive Player of the Week, while Duke goalkeeper Frederique Wollaert was named ACC Defensive Players of the Week.
  • After two weekends of conference play, Boston College and North Carolina both remain undefeated in ACC play, both posting a 3-0 record. Virginia and Duke have each lost just one game in league play.
  • Four of the top 10 teams in the October 6 RPI rankings hail from the ACC. North Carolina leads the country at No. 1, followed by No. 5 Virginia, No. 8 Boston College and No. 10 Duke.
  • North Carolina is one of two undefeated teams remaining in Division I field hockey with Northwestern being the other.
  • North Carolina has been the ACC's highest-scoring offense this season, averaging 4.43 goals per game, ranking second nationally. The Tar Heels and Duke also rank second nationally in goals against average, allowing just 0.43 goals per game.
