2024 NCAA Championship Bracket
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Seven Atlantic Coast Conference men’s soccer teams advanced to the round of 16 in the 2024 Division I NCAA Championship on Sunday, November 24. The ACC’s total of seven teams in the Sweet 16 is more than three times any other conference and marks the league’s most since sending eight to the round of 16 in 2016.
Clemson, NC State, Pitt, SMU, Virginia and Wake Forest notched second-round wins on Sunday, while Stanford advanced following a penalty-kick shootout.
Unseeded NC State (10-4-5) advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time since 1992 with a commanding 2-0 road triumph over No. 4 seed Georgetown on Sunday. Drew Lovelace and Donavan Phillip scored goals, while Taig Healy assisted on both scores. The Wolfpack will travel to No. 13 seed Marshall on Saturday, November 30.
Despite playing a man down for a majority of the contest, the No. 2 Pitt (13-5-0) knocked off Cornell, 1-0. Shortly after the Panthers went down a man in the 40th minute, Cornell was called for a handball inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick for Pitt. Graduate midfielder Arnau Vilamitjana then stepped to the spot and buried the penalty kick. The Panthers will play host to Kansas City next Sunday.
A week after winning the ACC Championship, Wake Forest (11-4-7) claimed a 2-1 victory over Maryland in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with Cooper Flax scoring the eventual game-winning goal in the 63rd minute. Next up for the Demon Deacons is a rematch with No. 9 seed Clemson (15-2-4), which opened its national title defense by topping Providence, 2-0, in Clemson, South Carolina, behind a brace from Wahabu Musah. Wake Forest and Clemson met on Sunday, November 17, in the ACC Championship Game, with the Demon Deacons prevailing in a penalty-kick shootout.
After conceding an early goal, No. 11 seed Virginia (11-6-3) bounced back with goals from Albin Gashi and AJ Smith to oust West Virginia, 2-1. The Cavaliers will remain home next Saturday to battle UMass, which was a 1-0 winner at No. 6 seed Penn.
Owen Zarnick scored in the 89th minute for No. 12 seed SMU (11-2-6) as the Mustangs topped Washington, 2-1, in Dallas, Texas. SMU heads to No. 5 seed Dayton next Saturday for a round-of-16 matchup.
No. 16 seed Stanford (9-5-5) played UC Santa Barbara to a 2-2 draw, with Noah Adnan scoring both goals. After two scoreless overtime periods, the Cardinal outlasted UCSB, 6-5, in a penalty-kick shootout and advanced to the third round, where Stanford will travel to top-seeded Ohio State next weekend.
No. 10 seed Duke (11-4-4) had its season end Sunday with a 1-0 home loss to San Diego.
The third round will be played Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1, while the quarterfinals will be played December 6 and 7. ESPNU will provide live coverage of all three games of the semifinals and final on December 13 and 16 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, as the Men’s College Cup returns to Cary for the ninth time.
An ACC team has won the men’s national soccer championship 20 times – most of any conference – including each of the last three seasons with Clemson in 2021 and 2023 and Syracuse in 2022. At least one ACC squad has reached the College Cup in 22 of the last 23 seasons, with 11 different league programs reaching the sport’s highest stage.
