CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.org) – Syracue’s Eefke van den Nieuwenhof and Duke’s Piper Hampsch have been named the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Co-Scholar-Athletes of the Year, the conference announced on Friday. The duo highlights the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team for the 2023 season.
Van den Nieuwenhof picked up a flurry of postseason honors, including ACC Defensive Player of the Year, NFHCA First Team All-American, All-ACC First Team, and NFHCA Mideast All-Region First Team. The Utrecht, Netherlands, native became the second player in Syracuse history to be a four-time All-America selection. She becomes the first player in Syracuse history earn ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in field hockey.
The senior led the scoring efforts for the Orange with 14 goals and four assists, tallying 32 points on the season. Half of van den Nieuwenhof’s goals came on the attacking penalty corner. The back logged a team-high three game-winning goals while also going six-for-eight on penalty stroke attempts.
Throughout the season, Syracuse allowed just 1.83 goals per game, thanks in large part to van den Nieuwenhof’s efforts on the back line. The back made a defensive save during the season and finished the season as one of three members of the Orange to tally the stat.
The Syracuse standout posted nearly flawless grades during the fall season while majoring in Biology. Previously, van den Nieuwenhof has been named to the AD Honor Roll while also being a 2022 All-ACC Academic Team selection.
Hampsch started all 23 games in goal for Duke this season, allowing just over one goal per game. The Blue Devils’ keeper’s 1.02 goals against average tied for third in the country and landed her All-ACC First Team and NFHCA Third Team All-America laurels. Hampsch becomes the first Blue Devil to be named ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in hockey since 2015.
Also named a NFHCA First-Team South All-Region honoree, Hampsch stopped a career-best 76.2 percent of shots throughout the year and turned in seven clean sheets to pair with 24 saves. The Hopedale, Massachusetts, native was named the ACC Goalkeeper of the Year.
Hampsch also serves as the Chair of the ACC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the President of Duke SAAC, and has represented the ACC at NCAA Division I SAAC Meetings. This year, Hampsch and her team of fellow student-athletes are leading the group on finalizing their mental health proposal and future SAAC structures. Additionally, she and SAAC are gearing up for and excited to welcome our new schools to the conference.
Hampsch is currently enrolled in graduate school at Duke, where she is pursuing a Master’s degree in Management Studies. The goalkeeper was also selected to the All-ACC Academic Team in 2022, while being honored on the ACC Honor Roll in each of the past four years.
For the second straight year, all seven ACC field hockey programs placed at least nine student-athletes on the All-ACC Academic Team for a total of 103 selections. Duke and Louisville both shared the conference lead with 18 members each.
Academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. In addition, student-athletes must compete in at least 50 percent of their team’s contests.
