Wake Forest’s Kurtz, Clemon’s Knaak Garner ACC Baseball Player of the Week Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – For the second straight week, Wake Forest junior infielder Nick Kurtz was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while Clemson freshman right-handed pitcher Aidan Knaak reclaimed the conference’s Pitcher of the Week honor.

The ACC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week are selected by a 17-member voting panel composed of media members and announced on Mondays during the regular season.

Kurtz finished the week 8-for-15 (.533) at the plate with five home runs, 12 runs batted in and eight runs scored over four games. Against No. 20 Coastal Carolina, the Lancaster, Pennsylvania, native homered twice and drove in five runs to help the Demon Deacons notch a ranked midweek victory. Kurtz added two more home runs in Sunday’s contest against Boston College, bringing his total to 13 long balls in the last nine games. The junior first baseman had homered in seven consecutive games, coming within one of matching the NCAA record, before seeing his streak snapped on Saturday in a 1-for-3 showing with an RBI triple.

Kurtz is the first student-athlete to earn ACC Player of the Week honors on multiple occasions this season.

Knaak worked a career-high 8.0 innings against NC State on Sunday, leading Clemson to a 7-0 victory. The freshman faced just two batters over the minimum, allowing two singles and a walk, while striking out 10 to earn the victory. The Fort Myers, Florida, native retired the first 14 hitters of the game and needed just 97 pitches, 71 of which were strikes, to complete eight frames.

Knaak becomes just the second student-athlete to win ACC Pitcher of the Week on multiple occasions this season, joining Wake Forest’s Chase Burns, who has claimed the honor on three occasions.
