This Week in ACC Baseball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – As the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball regular season draws to a close, all 14 teams throughout the league will play one final series this weekend before the 12 teams descend upon Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina, to compete in the 2024 ACC Baseball Championship, from May 21-26, at Truist Field.

To date, 10 ACC teams – Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest – have already secured their place in the postseason event. Additionally, the Tar Heels have secured the Coastal Division championship. Clemson leads the Atlantic Division heading into the final weekend of play, holding a 1.5-game lead over both Florida State and NC State and a 2.0-game lead over Wake Forest.
 
The remaining two spots in the conference tournament will be filled following the final weekend of play. Four teams – Boston College, Notre Dame, Miami and Pitt – will look to keep their ACC Championship hopes alive as the regular season concludes.
 
All 12 seeds for the ACC Baseball Championship will be announced on Saturday evening, following the conclusion of the regular season. The schedule for the ACC Baseball Championship will be announced on Sunday morning.
 
Noting ACC Baseball – May 16
• The ACC boasts the second-best conference RPI throughout the country while leading the country in road success and road RPI. Seven ACC teams remain ranked inside of the top 25, including four of the top 10 of the RPI. North Carolina sits atop the conference at No. 5, followed by No. 7 Clemson, No. 8 Wake Forest, No. 9 Florida State, No. 13 Virginia, No. 20 NC State and No. 23 Duke.
 
• Seven ACC teams are ranked in the top 25 of the most recent KPI rankings, which will also be given to the NCAA selection committee in 2024. North Carolina leads the way at No. 6, while No. 7 Clemson, No. 8 Wake Forest, No. 9 Florida State, No. 11 Virginia, No. 13 Duke and No. 18 NC State all sit inside the top 25. A total of nine of the ACC’s 14 teams are ranked inside the top 45.
 
• Seven teams throughout the ACC are ranked in this week’s D1Baseball poll. Clemson leads the way at No. 4, while No. 7 North Carolina, No. 8 Wake Forest, No. 10 Florida State, No. 11 Duke, No. 17 NC State and No. 18 Virginia also all remain ranked.
 
• A total of 10 teams have clinched a spot in the 2024 ACC Baseball Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina, beginning Tuesday, May 21. The four remaining teams - Boston College, Notre Dame, Miami and Pitt - will look to clinch one of the two remaining spots in the final weekend of regular season play.
 
• NC State’s Garrett Pennington was named the ACC Baseball Player of the Week, while Wake Forest’s Chase Burns was named ACC Pitcher of the Week for the fifth time this season. Burns becomes just the fourth pitcher in ACC history to earn Pitcher of the Week honors five or more times in a season.
 
• Among all active Division I baseball student-athletes, none has played in more games than NC State’s Alec Makarewicz, who has logged 251 career games played. On the mound, no active career players have pitched in more games than Virginia’s Angelo Torres, who has logged 114 appearances.
 
• Wake Forest’s Nick Kurtz leads all active players with 167 walks drawns. He also ranks second in on-base percentage (.511), fourth in home runs (59) and fourth in slugging percentage (.735).
 
• Kurtz also leads the country with 66 walks drawn this season, averaging a national-best average of 1.43 free passes per game.
 
• Virginia Tech’s Ben Watson leads the ACC in batting average, hitting .422 on the season, which ranks fifth nationally. Watson also leads the ACC with 84 base hits on the season, ranking seventh in Division I baseball. Duke’s Ben Miller is the only other player in the ACC to hit above .400 on the season, logging a .410 batting average.
 
• Eight ACC teams appear in D1Baseball’s most recent Projected Field of 64, including five regional hosts. Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest are all slotted as top 16 national seeds and would host regional contests at their respective ballparks. Duke and NC State were projected as No. 2 seeds while Georgia Tech was slotted at No. 3 seeds.
