This Week in ACC Baseball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – For the fourth consecutive week, a total of seven teams throughout the Atlantic Coast Conference are ranked in this week’s D1Baseball poll, Clemson leads the way at No. 4, while No. 7 Florida State, No. 10 Duke, No. 11 Virginia, No. 12 North Carolina, No. 13 Wake Forest and No. 20 NC State also appear in the poll.
 
As student-athletes face final exams to wrap up the school year, teams throughout the ACC will play a non-conference heavy schedule this weekend. Duke, Miami, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest will all face non-conference foes.
 
Seven teams throughout the ACC – Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, NC State, Virginia and Virginia Tech – each have a path to clinching a spot in the ACC Baseball Championship this weekend. The ACC Championship will take place from Tuesday, May 21, to Sunday, May 26, at Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina.
 
Nine ACC teams appear in D1Baseball’s most recent Projected Field of 64, including five regional hosts. Clemson, North Carolina, Florida State, Virginia and Duke are all slotted as top 16 national seeds and would host regional contests at their respective ballparks. NC State and Wake Forest were projected as No. 2 seeds while Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech are slotted at No. 3 seeds.
 
Noting ACC Baseball – May 2
  • The ACC boasts the second-best conference RPI throughout the country while leading the country in opponent strength of schedule, road success, and road RPI.
  • Six ACC teams remain ranked inside of the top 25 of the RPI. Clemson leads the conference at No. 4 while No. 5 Florida State, No. 6 North Carolina, No. 13 Virginia, No. 14 Wake Forest and No. 21 Duke all remain inside the top 25. A total of 11 of the ACC’s 14 teams rank in the top 64 nationally.
  • The ACC leads all conferences in batting average (.300), on-base percentage (.405), runs (4,90), hits (6,271), doubles (1,205), triples (103), total bases (10,781), runs batted in (4,511) and sacrifice flies (295).
  • Three teams throughout the ACC rank in the top 10 nationally with regard to winning percentage. Clemson and Florida State are tied for sixth (.791), while North Carolina ranks 10th nationally (.761).
  • Clemson’s Cam Cannarella was named the ACC Baseball Player of the Week, while North Carolina’s Jason DeCaro was named Pitcher of the Week.
  • Wake Forest’s Chase Burns leads all active Division I pitchers with 344 career strikeouts. This season, Burns has fanned 127 batters to lead the country. Florida State’s Jamie Arnold has punched out 89 hitters, ranking second in the ACC and fifth nationally.
  • Among active Division I baseball players, no one has played in more games than NC State’s Alec Makarewicz, who has logged 245 career games played. On the mound, nobody has pitched in more games than Virginia’s Angelo Torres, who has logged 111 appearances.
  • Wake Forest’s Nick Kurtz leads all active players with 167 walks drawn. He also ranks second in on-base percentage (.506), fifth in home runs (57) and fifth in slugging percentage (.732).
  • Kurtz leads the country with 56 walks drawn this season, including a national-best average of 1.44 walks per game.
  • As a team, Notre Dame leads the country with a .984 fielding percentage this season.
  • Virginia has logged 574 hits on the season and leads the country. The Cavaliers also boast 118 doubles and 454 runs scored, both of which rank second nationally.
  • North Carolina’s Matthew Matthijs leads all pitchers nationally with 11 wins, while Florida State’s Jamie Arnold and Wake Forest’s Chase Burns are tied for fifth with eight wins each.
