CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The No. 3 nationally-ranked Clemson Tigers completed an 8-7 walk-off, come-from-behind win over the No. 7-seeded Louisville Cardinals by way of a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning in the second game of the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship on Friday at Truist Field.
The middle of the No. 2-seeded Tigers' order recorded 10 of the 14 base hits for the game, highlighted by a 3-for-3 night with three runs scored by Cam Cannarella and three base hits from Tristan Bissetta, including a triple and two RBI. First baseman Jimmy Obertop was 2-for-4 with a home run, double, walk, four RBI and three runs scored, including the game-winning RBI in the ninth.
Four of the eight Louisville base hits came from the first two batters in the lineup, as JT Benson was 2-for-4 with a home run, RBI and two runs scored, and Dylan Hoy was 2-for-3, with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Catcher Luke Napleton also had a two-run home run in the loss.
The Tigers used five pitchers over the nine-inning contest, with the fifth hurler in reliever Austin Gordon (1-2) picking up the win with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Louisville pounced on the Tigers early, as Benson hit a solo home run to right-center field on the third pitch of the game to put the Cardinals in front 1-0 in the first inning.
The Cardinals added to their lead in the next at-bat, as Napleton blasted a two-run home run to center field before Hoy doubled down the left field line to drive in another run to extend the lead to 4-0 midway through the second inning.
The scoring continued for the Cardinals in the next two innings, as Louisville added an RBI on a ground out in the third and another run on a second RBI double from Hoy in the fourth inning to push the lead out to 6-0.
Clemson got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fourth inning, as Bissetta followed up a Cannarella single and an Obertop double with a base hit of his own to drive in a run and put the score at 6-1 heading into the fifth frame.
The Tigers continued to try to claw their way back into the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Bissetta came through again with an RBI triple off the wall in right-center field. After a Louisville pitching change, Jarrell hit a two-run home run over the seats in left-center field to cut the Cardinals’ lead to two at 6-4 with three innings to play.
Louisville took advantage of a lead-off walk, a single and a Clemson fielding error to get one run back in the top of the seventh inning before sending the Tigers down in order in the bottom half of the frame to head to the eighth up three at 7-4.
However, the three-run lead was not safe, as the Tigers’ Obertop tied the game with one swing of the bat, hammering a three-run home run to left field to knot the game up at 7-7 going into the ninth inning.
The Tigers completed the comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the home team loaded the bases with one out on a single through the right side, a single to center field and a single to right field.
The same man who tied the game up in the eighth with a three-run home run drove in the game-winning run, as Obertop drew a bases-loaded walk to propel the Tigers to an 8-7 walk-off win.
Both Clemson (41-14) and Louisville (32-24) will wait until Monday, May 27, to see when and where they will play with the 2024 NCAA Baseball Selection Show at noon on ESPN2.
