CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) - Virginia's Chris Rodesch was named the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and highlights the 2024 All-ACC Academic team announced Tuesday.
The 2023 ACC Men's Tennis Player of the Year, Rodesch is the fifth men's tennis student-athlete overall and the fourth from Virginia to repeat as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year (2023-24) since the award's inception. He follows Dominic Inglot (2008-09), Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (2016-17) and Carl Söderlund (2019-21) (no award was given in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
The Angelsberg, Luxembourg, native is now a three-time ITA All-American (2022-24) and earned the No. 4 seed in the 2024 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship. Rodesch was named the 2024 ITA Atlantic Region Senior Player of the Year after finishing the season ranked No. 7 nationally by the ITA.
He saw the highest ranked victory of his career in 2024 with a straight-set 6-3, 6-3, victory over the top-ranked player in the nation, Eliot Spizzirri of Texas, while on his way to recording a 16-2 singles record this season, including an 11-1 ACC singles record.
Duke's nine student-athletes on the 2024 All-ACC Academic Team led all schools and is followed by Boston College and Virginia with eight honorees each. Clemson, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech totaled seven apiece.
Rodesh leads seven student-athletes that were named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the fourth time: Duke's Andrew Zhang, Georgia Tech's Andres Martin, Virginia's Iñaki Montes and Jeffrey Von der Schulenburg, and Virginia Tech's Ryan Fishback and Hugo Maia.
Sixteen of 18 All-ACC Singles team honorees were named to the 2024 All-ACC Academic Team, including Rodesch who was named to the first team for singles and third team doubles.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative grade point average during one’s academic career. In addition, student-athletes must compete in at least 50 percent of their team’s contests.
