Virginia’s Cohen, North Carolina’s Wolfe Crowned as National Champions in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. (theACC.com) – Two student-athletes from the Atlantic Coast Conference were crowned as national champions at the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Virginia’s Shane Cohen won the individual national championship in the men’s 800-meter run with a time of 1:44.97. The senior from Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, was trailing the pack before making a late surge over the final 100 meters to take the gold medal.

Clemson’s Tarees Rhoden and Virginia Tech’s Nicholas Plant also earned first-team All-America honors in the 800-meter run.

North Carolina’s Parker Wolfe adds to his storied career with a national championship in the men’s 5,000-meter run on Friday night. The junior from Denver, Colorado, crossed the line in 13:54.43, just 0.22 seconds ahead of Northern Arizona’s Nico Young.

Virginia’s Nate Mountain took the silver medal in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase, clocking a time of 8:25.71. Mountain finished just over a second behind Parker Stokes of Georgetown, who won the national championship. Mountain’s teammate, Yasin Sado, alongside Notre Dame’s CJ Singleton, also earned first-team All-America honors in the steeplechase on Friday night.

Virginia posted the highest team finish among ACC schools, bringing an eighth-place finish back to Charlottesville. The Cavaliers totaled 26 points, while Miami recorded 22 points to tie for 10th place.



The NCAA Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships will conclude on Saturday, June 8 in Eugene. Events will begin at 1:30 p.m. ET, with the heptathlon. Running events will start at 5:00 p.m. ET, and field events will begin shortly afterward.
