Week 3 Preview: Non-Conference Play Dominates Saturday’s Slate

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – For the first time in 2024, the entire Atlantic Coast Conference football weekly slate will feature only non-conference games. The Week 3 matchups feature Boston College in a top 25 showdown, Wake Forest hosting a top five opponent, Pitt hosting the “Backyard Brawl” in a heated rivalry game, a renewal of an old ACC rivalry between Virginia and former conference member Maryland and more.

NC State looks to get back in the win column following a neutral-site loss to No. 14 Tennessee at the Duke’s Mayo Classic. The matchup between the Wolfpack and Bulldogs will be just the third in history, with NC State winning both previous matchups. NC State has been incredibly successful at home, winning 24 of its last 28 games inside of Carter-Finley Stadium. Wide receiver KC Concepcion became the second-fastest player in NC State history to reach 1,000 receiving yards, needing just 15 games to do so. Louisiana Tech is off to a 1-0 start this season after going 3-9 in 2023. The Bulldogs’ starting quarterback in 2023, Hank Bachmeier, transferred to Wake Forest for the 2024 campaign.

Florida State is still looking to crack into the win column in 2024, falling in both of its first two contests. The Seminoles have played a pair of ACC games thus far and will open their non-conference slate against Mike Norvell’s former team, the Memphis Tigers. Norvell posted a 38-15 record as the Tigers’ head coach, leading Memphis to four bowl games, including the 2019 Cotton Bowl. The Seminoles have allowed just 126.0 yards per game through the air, which is the second-best mark in the ACC. Florida State punter Alex Mastromanno was named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week in Week 1 after recording 313 punt yards on six attempts, including three that traveled over 50 yards. This season, Memphis is off to a 2-0 start, logging wins over North Alabama and Troy. The Tigers received votes in this week’s AP Top 25 poll, totaling 38 points.

After a 2-0 start to the Bill O’Brien era, Boston College is ranked for the first time since November 11, 2018. The Eagles look to notch their first win against a team ranked sixth or better in the AP poll since November 2, 2002, when Boston College knocked off No. 4 Notre Dame in South Bend. Boston College has been dominant on the ground to begin the season, boasting the ACC’s top rushing attack, averaging 282.5 yards per game. The Eagles were also dominant through the air against Duquesne, averaging 19.8 yards per pass attempt and 23.4 yards per completion – both single-game highs throughout the ACC this season. The Eagles will face stiff competition in the sixth-ranked Missouri Tigers, who haven’t allowed their opponents to score this season. After going 11-2 in 2023 with a win in the Cotton Bowl over No. 7 Ohio State, Missouri has blanked Murray State and Buffalo, scoring 89 points along the way, to kickstart the 2024 campaign.

The 107th edition of the Backyard Brawl will be highly anticipated by both Pitt and West Virginia fans. Pitt ranks third in the ACC in total offense, averaging 534.0 yards per game, gaining 7.22 yards per play. Desmond Reid has posted the two best single-game rushing performances in the ACC this season, rushing for 148 and 145 yards. Reid’s 293 rushing yards and 146.5 rushing yards per game both rank fifth nationally, while his 244.00 all-purpose yards per game lead the FBS through two weeks. The Panthers have also been extremely successful through the air, averaging 335.5 yards per game and seven total passing touchdowns. West Virginia is off to a 1-1 start this season, falling to No. 8 Penn State, 34-12, in Morgantown, West Virginia, in Week 1. The Mountaineers went 9-4 last season, capping the run with a victory in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Miami’s offense, led by quarterback Cam Ward, has been red-hot to begin the 2024 season. Ward ranks fifth throughout FBS football in total offense, averaging 367.5 yards per game. The Washington State transfer has thrown for more than 300 yards in both games for No. 10 Miami, with Xavier Restrepo logging more than 100 receiving yards in each contest. The Hurricanes rank second in the ACC in scoring, averaging 48.5 points per game. Miami’s defense has also been stellar in the early part of the season, ranking fourth in the league while allowing just 225.5 yards per game. Ball State opened the season with a 42-34 win over Missouri State after posting a 4-8 record in 2023, including a 3-5 mark in MAC play.

Everything has been clicking for Georgia Tech offensively to begin the season. The Yellow Jackets lead the ACC and rank ninth nationally in rushing touchdowns with nine. The Jackets’ offensive line has not allowed a sack through three games – the only team nationally with three games played without a sacked allowed. Georgia Tech ranks third in the ACC with 527 rushing yards while also scoring on 100-percent on their red zone appearances, going a perfect 8-for-8.  Quarterback Hayes King completed 29-of-39 pass attempts versus Syracuse, adding 67 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. VMI went 5-6 in 2023, including a 4-4 mark in SoCon play, but are still searching for their first win of 2024 after falling to No. 15/16 William & Mary and Bucknell.

Separated by less than 15 miles, North Carolina and North Carolina Central will meet on the gridiron for the first time this weekend. The Tar Heels are off to a 2-0 start with wins over Minnesota and Charlotte. Defensive lineman Jahvaree Ritzie leads the ACC and all of FBS football with 5.0 sacks on the season. Ritzie also ranks fourth nationally with 5.0 tackles-for-loss on the season. Tar Heel quarterback Conner Harrell completed 16-of-25 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns against Charlotte. Against the 49ers, Davion Gause became the second Tar Heel to rush for 100+ yards in a game this season, joining Omarion Hampton, who ran for 129 yards at Minnesota in Week 1.

After a thrilling double-overtime win last week at Northwestern, Duke looks to keep its momentum rolling in a Week 3 matchup with UConn. Duke’s Alex Howard is tied for fifth nationally with 5.0 tackles-for-loss while the Blue Devils lead the country in tackles-for-loss as a team, logging 13.5 on the season. Wide receiver Jordan Moore is tied for second in the nation, averaging 9.0 receptions per game. The Duke standout has caught a pass in 27 consecutive games – the longest such streak in the ACC. UConn got into the win column in Week 2 with a 63-17 victory over Merrimack. The Huskies went 3-9 in 2023 with wins over Rice, Sacred Heart and UMass.

The Hokies have been protective of the football throughout the season, only turning the ball over once through their first two games. On the other hand, the Virginia Tech defense has excelled in taking the ball away with cornerback Mansoor Delane recording three interceptions on the season. The Hokies have won three of the five previous meetings against Old Dominion but are still in search of their first-ever win in Norfolk. Old Dominion has dropped a pair of one-score games to begin the season after going 6-7 in 2023 with an appearance in the Famous Toastery Bowl.

Wake Forest is looking for its first win over a top-five team since October 26, 1946, when it beat No. 4 Tennessee in Knoxville. The Demon Deacons offense is led by quarterback Hank Bachmeier, who ranks 10th in the nation in total offense, averaging 346.5 yards per game. Demond Claiborne has run for 221 yards through the first two weeks for Wake Forest and looks to notch another strong showing against an Ole Miss defense that has allowed just 27.0 rushing yards per game this season. The fifth-ranked Rebels went 11-2 with a victory in the Cotton Bowl in 2023 and have remained red-hot to begin the 2024 season, outscoring opponents 128-3 through two games.

After winning just two ACC games in 2023, Virginia opened league play in Week 2 with a 31-30 comeback victory over Wake Forest. The Cavaliers’ quarterback Anthony Colandrea completed 33 passes against the Demon Deacons, the most by an ACC quarterback in a game this season, finishing with 357 passing yards and three touchdowns. Malachi Fields was Colandrea’s favorite target, hauling in a career-high 11 receptions for a career-best 148 receiving yards against Wake Forest. Saturday will be the 80th meeting between the Cavaliers and Terrapins with former ACC member Maryland holding a 45-32-2 lead in the all-time series. After an 8-5 season in 2023 which included a trip to the Music City Bowl, Maryland is off to a 1-1 start this season, falling to Michigan State, 27-24, to open Big Ten play.

For the first time as a member of the ACC, Cal is receiving votes in the AP Top 25 poll. The Golden Bears turned heads last week with a 21-14 victory at Auburn and look to break into the AP Top 25 for the first time since September 22, 2019, in the coming weeks. The Golden Bears have been phenomenal defensively, posting an FBS-leading seven interceptions through the first two weeks of the season. No other team has more than five. Entering Week 3, Cal also leads the nation in turnover margin (+3.50) and takeaways (8). Cal is also one of 37 FBS teams that has not thrown an interception this season. The meeting with the Aztecs will be Cal’s final non-conference tune-up before beginning its inaugural ACC slate next week in Tallahassee, Florida, against Florida State. Following a four-win season in 2023, San Diego State opened its 2024 campaign with a win over Texas A&M – Commerce before falling to Oregon State in Week 2.
