CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Three Atlantic Coast Conference defensive backs have been named to the 2026 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List, announced Wednesday by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Jim Thorpe Association.
Clemson’s Ashton Hampton, Miami’s Bryce Fitzgerald and Syracuse’s Chris Peal represent the ACC on the 35-player preseason watch list, which features defensive backs from 10 conferences and one independent institution.
The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award annually recognizes the best defensive back in college football based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character. Established in 1986, the award is named for legendary multi-sport athlete Jim Thorpe and is recognized as one of college football’s premier individual honors.

The preseason watch list is selected by a screening committee based on previous NCAA Division I performance and preseason All-America lists. The initial watch list is not final, as additional players who produce outstanding seasons may be considered for the semifinalist and finalist lists.
The award’s semifinalists are scheduled to be announced Tuesday, October 27, followed by the three finalists on Tuesday, November 24. The 2026 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award winner will be announced Friday, December 11, during
The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
