CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Six former standouts from current Atlantic Coast Conference schools will participate in this year’s WNBA Finals, which tip off on Friday, October 3, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. The six former ACC players are the most among all conferences.
The Phoenix Mercury, who advanced with a 3-1 semifinal series win over Minnesota, are represented by former Notre Dame standout Kathryn Westbeld and Stanford’s Kiana Williams. Westbeld has been a key contributor off the bench throughout the postseason, headlined by a 10-point effort in Game 2 of the first round against New York. Phoenix is seeking its first WNBA title since 2014.
Las Vegas secured its spot in the finals with a Game 5 victory over Indiana on Tuesday, September 30, in the semifinals. The Aces, aiming for their third championship in the last four seasons, feature four former ACC standouts. Notre Dame’s Jackie Young, the 2019 ACC Tournament MVP, is one of just five players averaging at least 20.0 points per game in this year’s playoffs (20.5). The Aces also boast Notre Dame’s Jewell Loyd, Duke’s Chelsea Gray and Louisville’s Dana Evans.
The WNBA Finals are a best-of-seven series with the first two games in Las Vegas before moving to Phoenix for Games 3 and 4. The sites will then alternate game-by-game until a champion is crowned.
