Duke, North Carolina and Virginia Advance to Semifinals of 2025 ACC Field Hockey Championship

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (theACC.com) – Duke, North Carolina and Virginia earned wins in the quarterfinals of the 2025 ACC Field Hockey Championship on Tuesday, November 4, at Louisville’s Trager Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky.

#1 North Carolina 2, #8 Louisville 1
North Carolina’s Reese Anetsberger opened the scoring with less than five minutes remaining in the second quarter. The freshman from Northbrook, Illinois, connected on an assist from Dani Mendez and buried a shot into the right side of the cage.

Two minutes into the second half, Louisville’s Rylie Wollerton buried an equalizer to even the game at 1-1. Wollerton, who was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, logged an unassisted goal on a breakaway, firing a shot from the right-side of the cage and beating the North Carolina goalkeeper.

It marked the first time since 2021 that North Carolina entered the fourth quarter of an ACC Field Hockey Championship game without a lead. The top-seeded Tar Heels retook the lead with 7:23 remaining in the fourth quarter with the go-ahead goal being scored by Isabel Boere on a penalty corner. The freshman was assisted by Ryleigh Heck and Sietske Brüning as North Carolina took a 2-1 lead.

Louisville, who entered as the No. 8 seed, pulled goalkeeper Emily Young with less than four minutes to play to add an extra attacker. Without a keeper in net, the Cardinals fought off a Tar Heel penalty corner but were unable to tie the game, ultimately falling 2-1 in the quarterfinal round.

#4 Duke 7, #5 California 1
A California team that was depleted by illness overnight jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the second quarter after a Duke turnover. First-Team All-All selection Liz Klompmaker ripped a backhanded shot past the Duke goalkeeper for her 16th goal of the season.

The Blue Devils’ Julie Boehringer logged her first career hat trick as the sophomore midfielder helped pace the No. 4-seed Duke to a 7-1 win against fifth-seeded California. The Munich, Germany, product logged the first hat trick in a game at the ACC Championship since Erin Matson did so for North Carolina in 2021.

Cal’s Liz Klompmaker opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, but the Blue Devils scored less than two minutes later and never looked back. The Blue Devils logged seven unanswered goals against the Golden Bears. In addition to the hat trick from Boehringer, the Blue Devils saw goals by Alaina McVeigh, Shae Wozniak and Maggie Kondrath.

The seven goals from Duke were the most in an ACC Field Hockey Championship game since the 2018 ACC Championship Game.

The Blue Devils will meet top-seeded North Carolina in a semifinal match on Thursday, November 6. The time of the contest will be announced later.

#2 Virginia 4, #7 Stanford 3
After falling behind 1-0 early, Virginia responded with a trio of unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead into the halftime break. The Cavaliers’ Bella Moore scored the equalizer before Emma Watchilla logged a pair of goals, including one coming off an assist by Suze Leemans, to give the Hoos a lead that they would never surrender.

Stanford, the No. 7 seed, cut the deficit to one at 3-2 in the third quarter when Nadine Brenninkmeyer found the back of the cage off an assist by Esther Pottebaum. However, Virginia responded early in the fourth quarter to push the lead back to a pair at 4-2.

The Cardinal refused to go down easily as Maroussia Walckiers used a backhanded flick to bring Stanford back within one. Off a penalty corner, Walckiers buried her own rebound to keep the Cardinal’s hope alive. However, the Stanford comeback efforts would fall short as the Cardinal were defeated by the Cavaliers, 4-3, in the quarterfinals.

The three-goal showing by the Cardinal was the most by a losing team in the ACC Field Hockey Championship since 2020, when North Carolina defeated Syracuse 4-3 in overtime.
