NC State Falls to Washington in OT in 2025 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship Game

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State staged a second-half rally to force overtime but fell in the extra stanza to Washington, 3-2, in the championship game of the 2025 NCAA Men’s College Cup in front of 10,316 at First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. Playing in its first-ever national championship game, NC State was making its second appearance in program history in the NCAA Men’s College Cup.

The Wolfpack finished their historic season with a 16-3-4 record.

NC State’s Donavan Phillip, Taig Healy and Nikola Markovic were named to the 2025 NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team.

Washington scored in the 44th minute when Zach Ramsey collected a loose ball that deflected off NC State goalkeeper Logan Erb and flicked it into the back of the net. The Huskies pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Richie Aman’s low cross found Joe Dale, who tapped it home from inside the 6-yard box.

The Wolfpack turned the momentum back in their favor in the 66th minute following a scrum in the box, with Donavan Phillip getting a foot on the ball and directing it off a Washington defender and past the keeper for his nation-leading 19th goal of the season.

NC State scored the equalizer in the 87th minute when Taig Healy found an opening near the top of the box and struck a well-placed ball just inside the right post, sending the partisan Wolfpack crowd into a frenzy.

Washington wasted little time in tallying the golden goal, scoring just under two minutes into extra time on a Harrison Bertos shot from short distance.

At least one ACC squad has now reached the Men’s College Cup in 23 of the last 25 seasons. NC State is the 12th different league program to reach the sport’s highest stage in that span.
