This Weekend in ACC Baseball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – For the first time ever, 16 baseball teams will play in Atlantic Coast Conference affairs on the same weekend. Conference play opened last week with 10 teams in action as Wake Forest was the lone team to win all three contests.

Six ACC baseball teams are ranked in the D1Baseball Top 25 Poll. Florida State leads the ACC at No. 5, followed by No. 6 North Carolina, No. 10 Clemson, No. 14 Wake Forest, No. 18 Stanford and No. 23 Virginia.

Duke and Virginia will make their first trips to the West Coast for a pair of conference series. The Blue Devils will travel to face No. 18 Stanford, who is ranked for the first time as a member of the ACC. The Cardinal won the series against then-No. 4 North Carolina in Chapel Hill last weekend. No. 23 Virginia will also head to Berkeley, California, to battle the Golden Bears for three games. Both series will begin at 9 p.m. ET on Friday, March 14.

Notre Dame, which o is the lone team in the ACC who has not played a home game to date, continues its lengthy road swing at No. 10 Clemson, beginning at 4 p.m. ET on Friday. Fellow road warriors Boston College and Pitt, who have combined for just three home games all season, will also be the visiting teams this weekend. The Eagles will travel to No. 5 Florida State, while the Panthers will battle Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

On Monday, March 10, Clemson sophomore second baseman Jarren Purify was named the ACC Player of the Week, while NC State sophomore left-handed pitcher Ryan Marohn was tabbed ACC Pitcher of the Week for games played March 3-9. Purify led No. 10 Clemson to a 5-0 record last week after going 12-for-20 (.600) at the plate with two home runs, two triples, a double, nine RBIs, five runs, a 1.150 slugging percentage, a .583 on-base percentage and one stolen base. For the second straight week, Marohn tossed a complete-game shutout as NC State extended its winning streak to eight games.
