This Weekend in ACC Baseball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – With five weeks remaining in the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball regular season, all 16 ACC teams will once again compete in conference play between Thursday, April 17, and Sunday, April 20. Entering the week, Georgia Tech holds a 1.5-game advantage on Clemson and Florida State, who are tied for second place.
 
Louisville and Clemson will highlight the ACC slate for this weekend in a top-20 showdown. Louisville, ranked No. 17 in the country according to D1Baseball, will head to Clemson, South Carolina, to battle No. 3 Clemson. Both teams have won eight of their last 10 contests while Clemson boasts an eye-popping 22-4 record at home this season. The series begins on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network Extra.
 
Seventh-ranked Florida State will host Virginia for three games, beginning on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network. The Seminoles have won seven of their last 10 games and enter the weekend tied for second place in the ACC. Virginia sits at 9-9 in conference play and has won two of its last three ACC series. ESPN2 will televise the Friday, April 18, game between the two teams, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
 
North Carolina, ranked No. 12 in the D1Baseball rankings, will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia, to meet Virginia Tech. The Tar Heels have hit their stride recently, winning eight of their last 10 contests, and four consecutive ACC series. The Hokies, who were ranked No. 25 last week, look to build on a 11-4 victory over East Tennessee State on Tuesday, April 15. All three games between the Tar Heels and the Hokies are slated to be streamed on ACCNX.
 
No. 14 Georgia Tech heads to Miami, Florida, for a three-game series against the Hurricanes. The Yellow Jackets have won six straight conference games after sweeping back-to-back opponents in ACC play for the first time since 2011. Miami is coming off of a series win against Duke last week and has won seven of their its 10 games. The games between Georgia Tech and Miami on Friday and Saturday, April 19, will each be televised on ACC Network.

  • 11 of the ACC’s 16 schools were included in this week’s D1Baseball Field of 64 projections, including Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina, who were projected regional hosts. Louisville, NC State and Wake Forest were slotted as No. 2 seeds, while Duke, Virginia and Virginia Tech earned a projected No. 3 seed. Stanford was listed as one of the “5 Teams to Watch”.
  • As of April 14, 11 of the ACC’s 16 teams rank inside the top 45 of RPI, including five teams in the top 25. Clemson leads the ACC at No. 6 in the RPI rankings, followed by No. 13 Georgia Tech, No. 14 North Carolina, No. 16 Florida State and No. 21 Wake Forest.
  • Florida State’s Joey Volini was tabbed the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Month for March on Tuesday, April 8, after posting a 5-0 record with a 1.09 ERA and 50 strikeouts over 33.0 innings of work. Volini was also nameda D1Baseball Midseason All-American and to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List.
  • North Carolina’s Gavin Gallaher was named the Perfect Game National Player of the Week on Wednesday, April 16, after going 9-for-15 at the plate with four home runs, 11 RBIs and seven runs scored.
  • The ACC had 12 played named to the 45-man Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List, which ranks second among all conferences. Florida State and Wake Forest led the league with three honorees each.
  • D1Baseball named 10 ACC standouts to its midseason All-America teams, including eight on the first team. Florida State’s Alex Lodise was also named Midseason National Player of the Year by D1Baseball, while Virginia Tech’s Sam Tackett was tabbed as the Midseason National Breakout Star.
  • Perfect Game named 12 ACC student-athletes to their Midseason All-America teams, including seven on the first team. PG also pegged six ACC standouts as Midseason Freshman All-Americans.
