DURHAM, N.C. (theACC.com) – No. 14 seed Boston College (27-28) picked up an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning to defeat No. 11 seed Notre Dame (32-21), 5-4, in the final game of the first round of the 2025 ACC Baseball Championship on Wednesday morning, May 21, in Durham, North Carolina.
The Eagles will take on No. 6 seed Virginia (32-17) in a second-round matchup on Wednesday, May 21, at 9 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
After not scoring a run since the third inning, Boston College got a one-out RBI single from Patrick Roche in the top of the 10th inning to propel the Eagles to a 5-4 extra-inning win over the Fighting Irish in a game that ended at 1:45 a.m. ET.
The Eagles scored five runs on eight hits, with none bigger than the game-winning RBI single from Roche (3-for-5, RBI). The other four runs came from a Kyle Wolff (1-for-3, HR, HBP, 3 RBI, run) three-run home run and a Gunnar Johnson (0-for-3, sac bunt, RBI) sacrifice bunt.
Notre Dame had four runs on eight hits, led by Jared Zimbardo (3-for-4, 2B, HBP) and his game-high three base hits, while four different Fighting Irish hitters had one RBI apiece in the loss – Parker Brzustewicz (1-for-4, 2B, BB, RBI), Connor Hincks (0-for-4, SF, RBI), Estevan Moreno (1-for-4, HR, BB, RBI, 2 runs) and Brady Gumpf (0-for-3, BB, RBI).
BC hurler Gavin Soares (4-1) earned the win, as he entered the game with one out in the sixth inning and fired 4.2 scoreless innings with just one hit, two walks and five strikeouts.
ND’s Tobey McDonough (2-1) was saddled with the loss, giving up one run on two hits and one strikeout over 2.0 innings of work out of the bullpen.
The two teams traded runs over the first few innings in the nightcap of day one, as Notre Dame scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double from Brzustewicz and a sacrifice fly only to see Boston College answer with a three-run home run in the top of the second inning from Wolff and another run on a squeeze play in the third frame to push the Eagles in front 4-2 midway through the third inning.
Notre Dame continued the back-and-forth scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field off the bat of Moreno to cut Boston College’s lead to one heading into the fifth inning.
After a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth for the Fighting Irish to tie the game at 4-4, neither team was able to plate the go-ahead run over the final three innings to send the game to extra innings.
