Boston College Advances to Quarterfinals of the 2025 ACC Baseball Championship

DURHAM, N.C. (theACC.com) – No. 14 seed Boston College (28-28) took a first-inning lead and did not look back in a 12-8 win over No. 6 seed Virginia (32-18) in the final game of the second round of the 2025 ACC Baseball Championship that started on Wednesday, May 21, and ended on Thursday, May 22, in Durham, North Carolina.

The Eagles will take on No. 3 seed North Carolina (39-12) in the quarterfinals on Friday, May 23, at 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network.

Both teams registered 11 hits during the game; however, the Eagles capitalized on five errors by Virginia and executed aggressive base running, recording seven stolen bases to secure the victory.

Offensively, the Eagles had eight different players register a hit in the win, headlined by three hits from Adam Magpoc (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI, SB) and two from Gunnar Johnson (2-for-3, BB, 2 runs). Jack Toomey (1-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI, run) led the team with three RBIs, while Josiah Ragsdale (1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 runs, 2 SB), Esteban Garcia (1-for-5, 2 RBI, run) and Magpoc all had two RBIs in the victory.

UVA’s Eric Becker (4-for-5, HR, 4 RBI, 2 runs) led the Cavaliers with a game-high four hits and was matched by Henry Ford (3-for-5, HR, 4 RBI, run) with a home run and four RBIs in the loss.

BC pitcher Kyle Kipp (4-3) picked up the win, throwing 3.0 innings out of the bullpen for the Eagles, giving up three unearned runs on two hits, one walk and one strikeout, while fellow reliever Cesar Gonzalez (1) earned the save by striking out six hitters over 3.0 scoreless innings.

The loss fell to Virginia’s starting pitcher Jay Woolfolk (4-3), as he was roughed up for seven runs, four of which were earned, on four hits, one walk, one hit batter and two strikeouts in just 1.1 innings on the mound.

Both teams got on the scoreboard right out of the gate in the late-night contest, as the Eagles scored five runs in the top half of the first inning on a pair of two-run doubles and a Virginia fielding error, only to see the Cavaliers get two runs back in the bottom half of the frame on a two-run home run down the right-field line from Becker.

The scoring carried over into the second inning, as BC took advantage of another Virginia miscue, pushing across two runs on a wild pitch and a throwing error from the catcher on the ensuing play to push the lead to 7-2 midway through the second inning.

Virginia quickly got those two runs back in the bottom of the second on a Becker RBI single up the middle, followed by another RBI single off the bat of Ford to put the score at 7-4.

After both teams stranded a runner on base in the third, the Eagles took advantage of yet another Virginia error to score two unearned runs, highlighted by an RBI base hit from Garcia, to push the lead to 9-4.

The Cavaliers refused to go away quietly, as they took advantage of a BC error, a single and a walk to load the bases with one out. Two batters later, following a fielder’s choice for the second out of the inning, Ford blasted a monster shot to left field for a three-run home run to trim the Eagles' lead to one at 9-8 with three innings left in the contest.

Virginia looked to continue its scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning, getting the potential game-tying run 90 feet away on a single and back-to-back wild pitches, only to see the next two hitters strike out and fly out to end the inning with the Eagles still in front by one.

Boston College broke the game wide open once again in the top of the eighth inning, as Ragsdale doubled down the left-field line to score two Eagles that had reached base safely on a hit-by-pitch and a throwing error to start the inning.

Two batters later, Ragsdale raced in from third base on a wild pitch to push the Eagles' lead back out to four at 12-8 midway through the eighth inning.

Gonzalez would pitch around a pair of singles in the bottom half of the eighth inning and send the Cavaliers down in order in the ninth to keep the Eagles’ season alive with the 12-8 win.
