DURHAM, N.C. (theACC.com) – No. 1 seed Georgia Tech (40-16) tied the ACC Baseball Championship record for the most home runs in a single tournament game with seven to defeat No. 16 seed California (24-31), 10-3, in the first of two quarterfinal games of the 2025 ACC Baseball Championship on Thursday, May 22, in Durham, North Carolina.
The Yellow Jackets will play the winner of No. 5 seed Clemson (42-15) and No. 4 seed NC State (33-18) in the semifinals on Saturday, May 24, at 1 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
The seven home runs tied the ACC Championship record set by Louisville in 2021.
Six Georgia Tech players recorded a home run in the win, highlighted by two home runs and four RBIs from Drew Burress (2-for-4, 2 HR, BB, 4 RBI, 2 runs). Kyle Lodise (1-for-3, HR, HBP, 2 RBI, run), Alex Hernandez (1-for-3, HR, HBP, RBI, run), Vahn Lackey (1-for-3, HR, sac bunt, RBI, run), Caleb Daniel (2-for-3, HR, HBP, RBI, run) and Drew Rogers (1-for-4, HR, RBI, run) all hit one home run.
The Golden Bears had 12 hits but only scored three runs while stranding 12 runners on base in the loss. Lead-off hitter Jarren Advincula (3-for-5, run, 2 SB) and seven-hole hitter Jacob French (4-for-5) combined for seven of the 12 base hits, all of which were singles, while PJ Moutzouridis (0-for-3, RBI), Dominic Smaldino (1-for-4, BB, RBI) and Carl Schmidt (1-for-5, RBI) all had one RBI for the game.
Picking up the win for GT was starting pitcher Tate McKee (7-3), as he quieted the Cal offense by holding the Golden Bears to just two runs on eight hits, one walk and 10 strikeouts.
Taking the loss for the Bears was JJ Hollis (0-1), as he gave up four runs on four hits, including three home runs and one strikeout in 0.2 innings of work.
In their first game of the 2025 ACC Baseball Championship, the Yellow Jackets used the long ball from the start, blasting three home runs – solo shots from Burress and Daniel that bookended a two-run shot from Lodise – in the bottom of the first inning to put the top seed in front 4-0 after just one inning of play.
Cal broke through in the top of the fifth on a pair of singles and a ground-out RBI to get on the scoreboard and then plated another run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Smaldino to trim the Georgia Tech lead to two at 4-2 in the seventh inning stretch.
GT’s bats woke up again in the seventh and eighth innings, as Rogers launched a solo home run to center field in the seventh and Hernandez followed with a solo shot of his own to right field to push the Yellow Jackets’ lead to three at 6-2.
Following a pitching change for Cal, the home run onslaught continued for the Jackets. This time, however, it was an inside-the-park home run as Lackey hit the ball to deep left-center field and sprinted around the bases as the ball bounced away from the diving centerfielder to increase the lead to five at 7-2.
The Yellow Jackets capped the scoring the same way it started, as Burress belted his second home run of the game, this time a three-run shot down the left-field line, to push the home team’s lead to the largest of the game at 10-2.
Cal plated one run in the top of the ninth to put the final score at 10-3.
