CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – As the 2025 field hockey season gets underway, Atlantic Coast Conference teams will open the season against an impressive slate. Teams from the ACC will square off against seven ranked teams throughout the opening weekend, including a total of six top-20 matchups.
 
The beginning of the season also marks the return of the unofficial conference showdown between the ACC and Big Ten. The two conferences will clash eight times throughout the opening weekend, highlighted by a top-10 showdown between No. 2 North Carolina and No. 7 Michigan in Iowa City, Iowa, on Friday, August 29 (1 p.m. ET). Virginia, ranked third nationally, will meet No. 18 Penn State on Friday at 5 p.m. ET, while No. 20 Wake Forest travels to No. 15 Iowa in a 6 p.m. ET nightcap. The Tar Heels and Demon Deacons will swap opponents on Sunday, August 31, with Wake Forest meeting Michigan at 11 a.m. ET, while North Carolina faces Iowa at 2 p.m. ET.
 
Stanford will begin the season on the road against No. 4 Maryland, clashing at noon ET on Friday. Later in the day, Duke, who begins the season at No. 5 in the NFHCA coaches’ poll, will host No. 17 Liberty at 4 p.m. ET.
 
Noting ACC Field Hockey
  • Six ACC teams begin the season ranked in the NFHCA Coaches Poll, led by No. 2 North Carolina.
  • The ACC’s four teams inside the top 10 leads all conferences.
  • Preseason favorite North Carolina made its 15th Final Four appearance in 16 seasons in 2024. 
  • The ACC will play seven matches against ranked teams in the opening weekend of the season, highlighted by a top 10 showdown between No. 2 North Carolina and No. 7 Michigan on Friday. 
  • ACC teams will face 17 opponents from the Big Ten throughout the first two weeks of the season. 
  • Of the 11-member preseason All-ACC team, six of the honorees were All-Americans in 2024, while eight members were All-ACC selections last season.
