Pitt Advances to ACC Quarterfinals with 7-4 Win Over Wake Forest

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – No. 14 seed Pitt continued its postseason run Wednesday night and Thursday morning with a 7-4 win over No. 6 seed Wake Forest in the second round of the 2026 ACC Baseball Championship at Truist Field.

The Panthers advance to the quarterfinals and will face No. 3 seed Florida State on Friday at 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network.

Pitt scored seven runs on nine hits and drew 11 walks in the victory. Caden Dulin (2-for-5, BB, RBI) and Trey Fenderson (2-for-5, 2B, RBI, run) each had two hits and one RBI, while Carter Dierdorf (2-for-4, BB, run) also recorded two hits for the Panthers. Four different Panther hitters had one RBI in the win.

Wake Forest finished with nine hits, led by Kade Lewis (2-for-4, HBP, run) and JD Stein (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) with two each. Dalton Wentz (1-for-4, HR, BB, 3 RBIs, run) hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs for the Demon Deacons.

Pitt starter Drew Lafferty (5-4) earned the win after allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings. The right-hander struck out two and walked one.

The Panthers’ bullpen combined to hold Wake Forest to one run over the final four innings. Eddie Smink recorded the final two outs to earn his fifth save of the season.

Pitt took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, using five walks, a wild pitch and an RBI fielder’s choice to capitalize on early scoring opportunities.

Wake Forest answered with a run in the bottom of the second on Stein’s RBI single before Wentz tied the game in the third inning with a two-run home run.

The Panthers regained the lead in the fifth inning and added to it in the sixth when Fenderson delivered a two-out RBI double to left-center field to make it 5-3.

Pitt added two more runs in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout and a two-out RBI single to extend the lead to 7-3.

Wake Forest loaded the bases in the ninth inning and brought the tying run to the plate, but Pitt limited the damage to one run to secure the victory.
