TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (theACC.com) – Florida State secured a spot in its seventh straight ACC Softball Championship Game with a 2-0 win over Notre Dame on Friday.
Sydney Sherrill’s solo home run to left center in the bottom of the first inning gave the No. 2 seed Seminoles (50-8) an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Dani Morgan hit a single down the third base line for the Seminoles. A flyout, a walk and a fielder’s choice advanced Morgan to third. A Rock Benavides single to center drove Morgan home, extending Florida State’s lead to 2-0.
No. 3 seed Notre Dame (36-16) had runners on base in the top of the first after Ali Wester singled to left and Katie Marino walked, but a double play and a ground out ended the inning.
In the top of the second, Abby Sweet doubled to center and MK Bonamy got on base with a bunt for Notre Dame before Florida State’s Meghan King retired the next three batters.
Wester got on base with a bunt Marino singled to left field to get two runners on base, but a Florida State double play and a fly out got the Seminoles out of the jam in the top of the third.
In the top of the fifth inning, Wester picked up her third hit of the day with a single up the middle. Cait Brooks walked to give the Irish two runners on base with two outs, but a fielder’s choice ended the inning.
King picked up the win after pitching a complete-game shutout.
Florida State advanced to tomorrow’s ACC Championship Final against No. 4 North Carolina at noon.
