TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (theACC.com) – The Florida State Seminoles captured their sixth straight ACC Softball Championship after shutting out North Carolina in six innings, 8-0, in Saturday’s Championship Game.
“I’m so proud of this team,” Florida State head coach Lonni Alameda said. “We have had an interesting season with a target on our back and pressure that you would never know what it’s like after winning a national championship. For them to come together as a team today, we played team softball and it was so much fun. For Makinzy Herzog to start the game off for us is a lot of pressure in a big moment and it was huge for this program and this coming weekend for us.”
Herzog pitched the first two innings in the circle for the No. 2 seed Seminoles (51-8), and only gave up one hit and while keeping the No. 4 Tar Heels (35-18) off the board.
North Carolina’s Kiani Ramsey got on base in the top of the first with a triple, but the Tar Heels couldn’t plate her.
Dani Morgan put Florida State on the board early, hitting a base hit through the right side and driving Carsyn Gordon home in the bottom of the first to give the Seminoles a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Zoe Casas and Makinzy Herzog each got a base hit, and Cali Harrod plated Casas with a single up the middle. North Carolina intentionally walked Sydney Sherrill to load the bases, and then walked Elizabeth Mason for a 3-0 Florida State lead.
Meghan King relieved Herzog in the third inning, giving up only four hits in four innings.
Harrod’s solo home run to left field started a three-run inning for the Seminoles in the bottom of the fourth. Gordon followed the long ball with a double to right center, and Sherrill drove her home with a single to center field. Mason’s groundout to second base scored Sherrill and gave Florida State a 6-0 lead.
Anna Shelnutt added a leadoff solo shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the fifth, and Sherrill’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth secured the title for the Seminoles.
King earned the win and was named the 2019 ACC Championship Most Valuable Player after helping the Seminoles shutout Georgia Tech (7-0), Notre Dame (2-0) and North Carolina.
The 2019 NCAA Softball selection show is scheduled for Sunday, May 12 at 9 p.m. on ESPN2.
