TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech shut out Virginia, 8-0, in five innings during the first round of the 2019 ACC Softball Championship.
Georgia Tech (31-26), the No. 7 seed, got on the board in the first inning after Katie Krzus knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to center. Tricia Awald's solo home run to left field gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead.
No. 10 Virginia (22-31) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first, but Morgan Bruce struck out Donna Friedman and Tori Gilbert lined out to center to get Georgia Tech out of the jam.
Virginia’s Allyson Frei relieved Aly Rayle for Virginia after the second inning, but Kaylee Ellebracht doubled to left with the bases loaded, extending the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
Frei walked Drew Puckett with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, and Ellebracht drove a base hit up the middle to send two runners home and end the game.
Bruce earned the win after allowing only three hits in five innings.
Georgia Tech advances to play No. 2 Florida State in Thursday’s 5 p.m. quarterfinal.
