TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (theACC.com) – Florida State blanked Georgia Tech, 7-0, in ACC Championship quarterfinal action on Thursday.
After nearly five innings with out a score, Anna Shelnutt ended a stalemate in the bottom of the fifth, hitting a home run over the center field fence for a two-run shot to give No. 2 seed Florida State (49-8) a 2-0 lead they would not relinquish.
Tricia Awald and Bailee Zeitler both got on base in the top of the second with one out for No. 7 seed Georgia Tech (31-27), but Meghan King struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, the Yellow Jackets' Kaylee Ellebracht doubled to right field with two outs, but the next batter grounded out to end the inning.
After Sydney Sherrill and Elizabeth Mason both walked in the bottom of the sixth, Dani Morgan homered to left field, scoring three more runs for the Seminoles. An error allowed Shelnutt to get on base, and Zoe Casas had a pinch hit two-run shot over the center field fence for a final score of 7-0.
Skye Webb doubled to right center in the top of the seventh for Georgia Tech, but three straight groundouts preserved the shutout for the Seminoles.
Meghan King earned the win after only allowing two hits and striking out eight in six innings.
Florida State advances to tomorrow’s 3 p.m. semifinal and will await the winner of No. 6 Duke vs. No. 3 Notre Dame.
