TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (theACC.com) – North Carolina took down Louisville, 9-3, in the second quarterfinal of the 2019 ACC Softball Championship.
The No. 4 seed Tar Heels (34-17) scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 3-3 tie. Campbell Hutcherson singled to start the inning, and Abby Settlemyre and Leah Murray all bunted to load the bases. Kristina Burkhardt’s base hit scored Hutcherson, and Kiani Ramsey and Brittany Picket walked with the bases loaded. Megan Dray hit a double to left center that sent Burkhardt and Ramsey home, and Zoe Goodman’s sacrifice fly scored Pickett.
The No. 5 seed, Louisville (33-21) struck first in the top of the second inning. Pickett walked Kyra Snyder, and Snyder quickly advanced to second on a passed ball, and then to third after Caitlin Ferguson grounded out. Maddy Newman’s RBI single to third drove home Snyder and gave the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Sidney Melton singled to center field for Louisville, and then stole second shortly after. Megan Hensley’s home run over the left field wall drove in Melton and made the score 3-0 in favor of the Cardinals.
Hutcherson singled to left field to start the bottom of the third inning for the Tar Heels, eventually stealing second base. Louisville’s Danielle Watson walked Murray, and Burkhardt got a base hit up the middle that sent Hutcherson home to cut Louisville’s lead to two. Ramsey’s double to left center knocked in both Murray and Burkhardt, evening the score at 3-3.
Pickett was credited with the win after pitching a complete game and allowing only two earned runs.
North Carolina advances to tomorrow’s 1 p.m. semifinal against No. 8 NC State.
