TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (theACC.com) – NC State jumped out to an early lead and held on to take down top-seeded Virginia Tech, 3-2, in ACC Softball Championship quarterfinal action on Thursday.
The No. 8 Wolfpack (31-26) started the scoring off in the top of the first after Logan Morris’ RBI single through the right side sent Sam Russ home and put NC State on the board, 1-0.
Virginia Tech’s (45-9) Maddi Banks tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third with a solo shot to left field.
NC State answered in the top of the fourth, after Morris hit a single to left and Skylar Johnston doubled down the left field line, setting up a Brigette Nordberg RBI single to left that drove Morris in. Johnston touched home after Natalie Jones hit into a fielder’s choice, giving the Wolfpack a 3-1 lead.
Virginia Tech cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth after Mackenzie Lawter hit a long ball over the center field fence.
Devin Wallace picked up the win for the Wolfpack, allowing two earned runs in four innings.
NC State advances to the semifinals of the ACC Championship for the second time in three years and will await the winner of No. 5 Louisville vs. No. 4 North Carolina.
