Holcomb, Seye, Smir Earn ACC Men’s Soccer Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest junior forward Kyle Holcomb and Clemson sophomore forward Mohamed Seye have been tabbed as the ACC Men’s Soccer Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while North Carolina junior goalkeeper Alec Smir earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week laurels.

Holcomb scored a brace in top-ranked Wake Forest’s 4-1 ACC-opening victory Saturday night against NC State. He recorded the eventual game-winning goal just after halftime in the 46th minute off a feed from Jake Swallen. A native of San Marcos, California, Holcomb added another score in the 36th minute, also on a pass from Swallen. Holcomb now leads the ACC in points (6) and goals (3) while scoring in back-to-back games for the third time in his career.

Seye scored two goals as third-ranked Clemson opened its season with a 3-0 win over South Carolina. It was Seye’s second career multi-goal game. He scored goals in the 13th and 47th minutes as the Tigers dominated in the win. The native of Valencia, Spain, also helped create the Tigers’ other score, as he was fouled inside the 18-yard box to give Clemson a penalty-kick opportunity, which was converted by Callum Johnson. Seye set personal career highs for shots (5) and shots on goal (3).

Smir helped UNC open its season on a high note on Friday with a 2-0 win at Duke. The Greensboro, North Carolina, native recorded his ninth career shutout and his eighth in his last 19 games started. Smir saved all three Duke shots on goal in 90 minutes played. He also controlled the action from the back throughout the night, directing the Tar Heel defense and intercepting multiple crossing passes to lead the UNC to the road win.

Clemson kicks off ACC Men’s Soccer this week with a 6 p.m. Monday contest against UAB which will air on ACC Network. Pitt and Syracuse square off at 7 p.m. Tuesday in an ACC match that also will be broadcast on ACCN.
