No. 2 Syracuse Tops No. 7 Virginia Tech in ACC Quarterfinals, 9-4

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (theACC.com) –
Second-seeded Syracuse used a dominant defensive performance to defeat No. 7 Virginia Tech, 9-4, Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Orange (13-2) moves on to play No. 3 seed Boston College or No. 6 Virginia in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
 
The 13 goals between the two teams marked the lowest scoring ACC Tournament game since North Carolina topped Duke, 7-6, in the 2016 semifinals. Virginia Tech’s four goals were the fewest by a team in an ACC Tournament game since Notre Dame scored four against UNC in the 2015 semifinals.
 
Sam Swart, Meaghan Tyrrell and Emma Tyrrell each scored two goals for Syracuse, while Sierra Cockerille recorded a goal and three assists. Paige Tyson paced Virginia Tech (5-11) with a pair of goals, while Sarah Lubnow assisted on three of the Hokies’ four goals.
 
Syracuse held Virginia Tech scoreless for over 26 minutes across two halves, breaking open a 1-1 tie midway through the first half. The Orange used a balanced offensive effort in the first half with five goals from five goal scorers to take a 5-1 lead into the halftime break.
 
Virginia Tech broke its long scoring drought with a Paige Petty goal with 24:42 remaining to cut into the lead, but the Orange responded with goals from Sam Swart, Meaghan Tyrrell and Emma Tyrrell, all assisted by Sierra Cockerille, in pushing the lead to six, 8-2.
 
The Hokies trimmed the lead to four, 8-4, on a Tyson goal with 7:03 remaining but the Orange clamped down defensively again to hold Virginia Tech scoreless the rest of the way.
 
The teams combined for 38 turnovers, with Virginia Tech committing 24 and Syracuse 14.
 
The semifinals of the 2021 ACC Championship will take place on Friday with No. 1 seed North Carolina playing No. 4 Notre Dame at noon and Syracuse taking on the BC-UVa victor at 2:30 p.m. The championship game will be played Sunday at noon. All games of the tournament will be televised on ACC Network.
