No. 2 Syracuse Advances to Title Game With 19-17 Win Over No. 3 Boston College

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (theACC.com) – No. 2 seed Syracuse outlasted No. 3 seed Boston College, 19-17, Friday afternoon in a semifinal thriller at the 2021 ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship, held at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Syracuse (14-2) advances to play top-seeded North Carolina (17-0) at noon Sunday in the championship game. ACC Network has the television broadcast.
 
The 36 goals between the teams matches the most in a game in ACC Championship history. The record of 36 originally was set in a 19-17 overtime win for Maryland over North Carolina in the 1999 semifinals.
 
Freshman Emma Ward scored five goals and added an assist for Syracuse. Emma Tyrrell scored four goals, while her sister Meaghan scored a pair of goals and added a team-high three assists. Boston College senior attacker Charlotte North scored six goals and added an assist while piling up 11 draw controls. Freshman Belle Smith racked up five goals and an assist for BC (13-3).
 
The game was filled with big runs on both sides. Syracuse took the momentum into halftime after scoring the final three goals, including a pair in the final 20 seconds, capped by Emma Tyrrell’s goal with five seconds left for an 11-6 halftime edge.
 
The Orange extended the lead to six, 13-7, on Sierra Cockerille’s score with 27:43 remaining in the second half before Boston College came roaring back. The Eagles scored the game’s next seven goals, with three coming from Smith, including the go-ahead goal for a 14-13 lead.
 
Syracuse responded with four of the next five goals to take the lead back, 17-15, with 8:15 left. BC against battled back as North fired in a tough-angle rocket to cut the lead to 17-16 with 7:19 remaining and Smith tied the game from short range with 3:18 left. The Orange countered with a Ward goal with 1:39 left for the eventual game-winning goal and added an Emma Tyrrell insurance goal with 51 seconds left.
