EARLYSVILLE, Va. (theACC.com) – The University of Virginia will play host to the Atlantic Coast Conference Cross County Championships on Friday, October 28, at the Panorama Farms course. The Men’s 8K Championship is set for a 10:40 a.m. start, followed by the Women’s 6K Championship at 11:30. ACC Network plans live coverage of both meets, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

• Flash Results will again post live scoring during and at the conclusion of both races and may be accessed at Live Results.

• The defending national champion NC State women, ranked No. 1 nationally throughout the current season, seek their seventh straight ACC Championship. The Wolfpack owns 27 total ACC titles in women’s cross country, the most by any league school in any women's sport.

• Notre Dame, with a solid blend of veterans and first-year runners, will enter the Men’s Championship as two-time defending champion and seeks its fourth ACC title in five years. Syracuse has won six ACC men’s cross country titles since joining the conference in 2013, including five straight from 2013-17.

• The ACC continues to lead all conferences with a season-high seven teams ranked nationally in the USTFCCCA Men’s Coaches Poll. Notre Dame leads the way at No. 6, followed by No. 8 Wake Forest. NC State made a strong move to No. 12 after being unranked in each of the four polls prior to last week.

• The USTFCCCA men’s top-30 poll also features No. 13 Virginia, No. 16 Syracuse, No. 18 North Carolina and No. 29 Duke.

•  NC State continues to hold the No. 1 position in the USTFCCCA Women’s Poll and is joined by No. 6 Notre Dame and No. 8 North Carolina for a nation-leading three ACC teams among the top 10. They are joined by No. 15 Syracuse and No. 25 Virginia to give the ACC five ranked women’s teams, tied for second-most among all conferences.

• The Wolfpack has been the unanimous No. 1 team in the USTFCCCA women's poll throughout the season.

• NC State’s Katelyn Tuohy was honored as the USTFCCCA National Female Athlete of the Week twice this season. ACC runners have earned four total USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Year honors this cross country season. In addition to NC State’s Tuohy, North Carolina's Brynn Brown was recognized on Sept. 19, and Miami's Daphnee Lavassas was honored Oct. 10.

• NC State’s women return a strong nucleus from its 2021 squad. Kelsey Chmiel – the runner-up to Tuohy at this year’s Nuttycombe Invite – placed first at last year’s ACC Championship at Notre Dame while Tuohy took the silver medal. Sam Bush placed eighth last season. The Wolfpack finished last year’s race with 20 points, which tied for the lowest team score in the history of the ACC Women’s Championship.

• The Wake Forest men, picked to finish first in the ACC by the conference coaches in preseason, has ranked among the top-10 nationally throughout the season and will enter the ACC Championship riding the momentum of a recent first-place team finish in the Panorama Farms XC 23 Invitational – which was run on the same course that will host Friday’s ACC Championship. Despite missing last season's regional runner-up Aaron Las Heras, three Deacons finished in the top-10 in the men's 8K, paced by two-time All-American Zach Facioni, who finished second overall (23:11.5). Thomas Vanoppen (23:18.4) and Luke Tewalt 23:24.7) joined Facioni in the top-10 placing fourth and ninth, respectively.

• Facioni earned the silver medal in the ACC Men’s Championship in 2018 at Boston’s Franklin Park and was a top-10 finisher last year.

• This will mark the 11th time Virginia has played host to the ACC Cross Country Championships and the first since 2014, when the Syracuse men and North Carolina women claimed team titles.

• The top 21 men’s and women’s finishers at the ACC Championships will earn All-ACC recognition. The first true freshman to cross the finish line in the men’s and women’s races will be recognized as ACC Freshmen of the Year. North Carolina earned both Freshman of the Year honors last season with Brynn Brown leading freshmen runners on the women’s side (sixth overall) and Parker Wolfe on the men’s side (seventh overall).

• ACC Runners of the Year and Coaches of the Year will be determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches next month following the completion of the NCAA Championships.

• NC State leads all schools with a total of 43 ACC cross country championships – 16 men’s and 27 women’s. Hall of Fame coach Rollie Geiger owns 34 titles (15 men’s, 19 women’s) to rank as the all-time leader. Laurie Henes has coached the Wolfpack to seven women's championships, including the last six in succession.

• North Carolina ranks second among ACC men’s programs with nine team titles. Florida State’s women claimed team championships seven straight seasons (2007 through 2013).

ACC Celebrates 2022 Fall Unity Week
As part of the ACC’s continued commitment to diversity, inclusion, social justice and racial equity, the league is conducting its third annual Fall Unity Week, Oct. 22-30.

ACC Unity Weeks are an initiative of the ACC’s Committee for Racial and Social Justice (CORE - Champions of Racial Equity) and have been developed in conjunction with its 15 member institutions.

ACC athletics departments are encouraged to actively engage in activities with their campus and local communities that promote unity. Some examples include community service projects, Unity walks, Town Hall meetings, partnerships with local social justice organizations and/or civic groups, civic engagement education and celebration of institutional UNITE Award recipients. The theme for the 2022-23 academic year is “Inclusion,” chosen by CORE.

A moment of unity will occur before or during ACC competitions throughout the week. Each of the ACC’s fall sports are in action, including the ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 28, which will be the conference’s first championship of the 2022-23 school year.
