Noting ACC Volleyball
- Three ACC teams are ranked in top 15 of the AVCA Top 25 Poll (Nov. 14). Louisville is No. 4, Pitt is No. 7 and Georgia Tech is No. 13.
- Pitt holds the top spot in the ACC at 25-2 after another two-win weekend, and remains undefeated in conference play at 15-0.
- The Panthers have a chance to clinch a share of the ACC Championship with a win at Louisville on Friday. The ACC Volleyball Champion is determined based on the regular-season record, as there is no ACC Volleyball tournament.
- Pitt has won 18 matches in a row - the third longest streak in Division I - and holds the nation’s longest active road winning streak at 15.
- This weekend’s ACC Network battle between Pitt and Louisville marks the fourth top 10 matchup between ACC teams this season. Along with Wednesday’s 6 p.m. matchup between Wake Forest and Duke, all but two of the remaining matches will be available on ACC Network Extra.
- Louisville’s Claire Chaussee was named the ACC Volleyball Player of the Week. Chaussee tallied 37 kills as then-No. 5 Louisville took down both No. 13 Georgia Tech and North Carolina over the weekend. Against the Yellow Jackets, she set a career high with 27 kills and added 10 digs for her fourth double-double this season. With 10 kills against the Tar Heels, the Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native registered her 18th and 19th double-digit kill matches. She also recorded a season-high four blocks. Averaging 4.6 kills over the weekend, Chaussee posted a .306 hitting percentage.
- Virginia Tech’s Hanna Borer and Wake Forest’s Emma Farrell shared ACC Volleyball Freshman of the Week honors. Borer amassed 70 assists while averaging a consistent 10 assists per set throughout the weekend. With 16 digs and 40 assists against Wake Forest, the Lewis Center, Ohio, native earned her 12th double-double of the season and is tied for third-most in the ACC. In VT’s loss against Virginia, the freshman kicked off the weekend with 30 assists in the Hokies’ sweep of the Cavaliers. Overall, she totaled four kills and assisted on three blocks in the Hokies’ two-match weekend. Farrell led the Deacons in their four-set win over Virginia Tech, averaging 5.5 digs per set. She recorded 22 total on the weekend, her highest mark in an ACC match this season. The Norcross, Georgia native added a service ace and three assists.
- Players across the ACC are ranked in the top 10 in the NCAA in multiple categories: Julia Bergmann of Georgia Tech is second in the country in points per set (6.04), has the third-most kills per set in the nation with 5.37, has the 11th-highest total kills at 462 and owns the fifth-highest attacks per set at 12.84 this season. Pitt middle blocker Serena Gray is second in the ACC and seventh in the NCAA in hitting percentage at .426. Duke’s Gracie Johnson ranks 13th nationally with 51 service aces and 10th in aces per set (0.56). Amaya Tillman of Duke is seventh in the NCAA in blocks per set at 1.53.
- Among active players, Syracuse’s Bre Walp is tied for the ninth-most total career blocks in the nation at 503.
- The Orange’s Polina Shemanova leads the league in double-doubles with 18. Notre Dame’s Phyona Schrader is second with 16.
- Shemanova is ninth among active leaders in the NCAA in total kills (1,825) and 13th in kills per set (4.22). Bergmann is 20th in total kills (1,654) and 11th in kills per set (4.30).
- Louisville and Pitt are ranked among the top 40 nationally in hitting percentage. The Cardinals improved to seventh at .290, and Pitt moved up a spot to 20th at .272. Louisville owns the third highest blocks per set average in the NCAA (2.97).
- Five ACC teams - Louisville (5th), Pitt (8th), Syracuse (11th), Miami (24th) and Georgia Tech (28th) - have each faced one of the nation’s 30 most difficult schedules based on past opposition winning percentage.
- Florida State’s Chris Poole and North Carolina’s Joe Sagula rank second and third, respectively, in wins among active head coaches. Poole is second in the country with 893 victories, while Sagula is third with 863 wins. Duke’s Jolene Nagel is 13th with 682.
- ACC Network will air 21 conference volleyball matches this season. More than 150 ACC volleyball matches are slated for ACC Network Extra. Follow all the ACC volleyball action with updated scores, schedules at standings at theACC.com.
- SiriusXM produced an ACC volleyball preview show, which debuted on Thursday, Aug. 18 and is available on demand on the SXM App. Hosted by ESPN’s Katie George, a former standout volleyball player at Louisville, the show features interviews with all 15 head coaches and 19 student-athletes.
- The ACC is poised for another outstanding year after posting its most successful season in 2021. The ACC had two teams in the national semifinals for the first time in league history and its six NCAA teams tied the league record. The three ACC teams in the regional finals and third round, and five teams in the second round were all the most in conference history.
- Louisville was selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2022 ACC Volleyball Championship following a vote of the league’s head coaches. The Cardinals received 10 first-place votes, while Pitt earned five. Pitt finished second in the voting with 185 points, followed by Georgia Tech (173), Miami (150) and Florida State (145).
- Louisville’s five preseason All-ACC selections led the conference, while Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Pitt had three each. Miami had two players on the preseason team and Florida State and Syracuse had one each.
