Noting ACC Volleyball

  • Three ACC teams are ranked in top 15 of the AVCA Top 25 Poll (Nov. 7). Louisville is No. 5, Pitt is No. 7 and Georgia Tech is No. 13.
  • Pitt holds the top spot in the ACC after another two-win weekend at 24-2, while remaining undefeated in conference play at 14-0. 
  • Two matchups will be broadcast on ACC Network this weekend: Florida State at Notre Dame at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Syracuse at Boston College at noon on Sunday. All other matches this week are available on ACC Network Extra.
  • Players across the ACC are ranked in the top 10 in the NCAA in multiple categories: Julia Bergmann of Georgia Tech leads the country in points per set (6.06), has the second-most kills per set in the nation with 5.40, has the 10th-highest total kills at 437 and owns the seventh-highest attacks per set at 12.78 this season. Pitt middle blocker Serena Gray is second in the ACC and ninth in the NCAA in hitting percentage at .417. Duke’s Gracie Johnson ranks ninth nationally with 50 service aces and eighth in aces per set (0.58). Amaya Tillman of Duke is seventh in the NCAA in blocks per set at 1.53.
  • Among active players, Syracuse’s Bre Walp has the third-highest total career blocks in the nation at 432. 
  • The Orange’s Polina Shemanova leads the league in double-doubles with 17. Notre Dame’s Phyona Schrader is second with 15. 
  • Shemanova is seventh among active leaders in the NCAA in total kills (1,805) and 12th in kills per set (4.29). Bergmann is 11th in kills per set (4.24). 
  • Bergmann tied a career-high and a Georgia Tech program record with 38 kills in a reverse sweep of Florida State on Sunday. She is the first Yellow Jacket with four matches of 30+ kills and is seventh in program history in career kills with 1,630. She finished the weekend with 54 total kills. 
  • Pitt has won 17 matches in a row - the fourth longest streak in Division I - and stretched the nation’s longest active road winning streak to 15. The Panthers own the fifth best opponent hitting percentage , limiting their opponents to just .140. 
  • Louisville, Pitt and Florida State are ranked among the top 40 nationally in hitting percentage. The Cardinals are in ninth at .289, Pitt sits 21st at .271 and Florida State moved up to 28th hitting at a .262 clip. The Cardinals also own the third highest blocks per set average in the NCAA with 3.06. 
  • Louisville (6th), Pitt (9th), Syracuse (18th), Miami (26th) and Georgia Tech (36th) have each faced one of the nation’s 40 most difficult schedules based on past opposition winning percentage. 
  • Florida State’s Chris Poole and North Carolina’s Joe Sagula rank second and third, respectively, in wins among active head coaches. Poole is second in the country with 892 victories, while Sagula is third with 863 wins. Duke’s Jolene Nagel is 13th with 681.
  • ACC Network will air 21 conference volleyball matches this season. More than 150 ACC volleyball matches are slated for ACC Network Extra. Follow all the ACC volleyball action with updated scores, schedules at standings at theACC.com.
  • SiriusXM produced an ACC volleyball preview show, which debuted on Thursday, Aug. 18 and is available on demand on the SXM App. Hosted by ESPN’s Katie George, a former standout volleyball player at Louisville, the show features interviews with all 15 head coaches and 19 student-athletes.
  • The ACC is poised for another outstanding year after posting its most successful season in 2021. The ACC had two teams in the national semifinals for the first time in league history and its six NCAA teams tied the league record. The three ACC teams in the regional finals and third round, and five teams in the second round were all the most in conference history.
  • Louisville was selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2022 ACC Volleyball Championship following a vote of the league’s head coaches. The Cardinals received 10 first-place votes, while Pitt earned five. Pitt finished second in the voting with 185 points, followed by Georgia Tech (173), Miami (150) and Florida State (145).
  • Louisville’s five preseason All-ACC selections led the conference, while Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Pitt had three each. Miami had two players on the preseason team and Florida State and Syracuse had one each.
