DURHAM, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame won 10 medals Saturday during the individual portion of the 2022 ACC Fencing Championships at Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. The Fighting Irish won five of the nine medals in both the men’s and women’s competitions, including five of the six gold medals. Duke won six medals, while Boston College and North Carolina each captured one medal.
The team competition will be held Sunday, with the men kicking things off at 9:30 a.m. and the women opening at 1 p.m. ACC Network Extra will have live coverage of the team championships, beginning at 9:30 a.m. ACC Network will carry a tape-delayed broadcast of the individual finals at 8 p.m. Sunday. The men’s team finals will re-air at 1 p.m. Monday, while the women’s team finals will re-air at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Notre Dame’s Jared Smith defeated teammate Malcolm Fields, 15-7, to capture the men’s sabre championship. Duke’s Terence Lee claimed third place. The Fighting Irish’s Andrew Machovec rallied late to win his second ACC men’s foil title, downing Boston College’s Brian Wang, 15-14. The two-time All-American scored five of the bout’s last six points in earning the championship. Duke’s David Tierney took third place.
North Carolina freshman Eli Lippman took the men’s epee crown, defeating Notre Dame’s Hunter Candreva, 15-10, in the final. Notre Dame’s Stephen Ewart notched third place.
Notre Dame swept the women’s gold medals. The Irish’s Amanda Pirkowski topped Duke’s Sarah Lurye, 15-11, to win the women’s epee championship. Duke’s Rachel Kowalsky notched the bronze medal. Rebeca Candescu outlasted ND teammate Karina Yaroshenko, 15-9, to capture the women’s foil crown. Duke’s Christina Ferrari claimed third place.
Daria Kudriavtseva completed the gold medal sweep for the Irish by defeating teammate Atara Greenbaum, 15-9, to win the women’s sabre championship. Duke’s Vivien Buchmann earned the bronze medal.
