GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College graduate attacker Charlotte North and Virginia Tech freshman midfielder Olivia Vergano were named the ACC Co-Offensive Players of the Week, and BC sophomore defender Sydney Scales and Syracuse senior defender Sarah Cooper were chosen the Co-Defensive Players of the Week as the conference announced weekly women’s lacrosse honors on Tuesday.
North dominated in wins over No. 11 Denver (9-5) and Yale (21-9), leading the team with 11 goals and 12 total points. The senior from Dallas scored four goals and tallied an assist in the win over the Pioneers, helping BC snap DU’s 21-game home win streak. Against Yale, she tied a season high with seven goals. It was the third time this season she has scored at least seven goals. North also earned a season-high 14 draw controls in the win. She posted an impressive shot on goal percentage of 87.5% (14-16) and shot percentage of 68.8% (11-16). Her 41 goals this season rank as the most in the nation.
Vergano scored eight goals last week in two Virginia Tech victories. She recorded five points with four goals and an assist Thursday in the Hokies’ 14-13 upset of No. 15 Notre Dame. In that contest the native of West Babylon, New York, also corralled five draw controls. She scored four more goals Saturday in a 17-5 win over Winthrop, while she also recorded six draw controls.
Cooper anchored a Syracuse defense that held Virginia without a goal for 8:31 in the second quarter as the Orange scored five unanswered goals to pull away for a 17-11 road win over the Cavaliers. The native of Lutherville, Maryland, recorded three draw controls to help Syracuse to a 17-17 split in the draw circle. Virginia entered the game ranked second in the nation in draw controls per game.
A native of Walpole, Massachusetts, Scales was key on defense in the Eagles’ wins over Denver and Yale. She helped hold DU's Lauren Black, the reigning Big East Conference Attacker of the Week, to zero goals. She also assisted in limiting Bea Behrins, the Pioneers' leading goal scorer, to just one goal. She totaled four ground balls and two caused turnovers for the week.
Seven ACC women’s lacrosse teams are ranked in the latest Inside Lacrosse Women/IWLCA poll, with the ACC holding each of the top three spots and seven of the top 25.
