GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina led the way as the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its 2022 Women’s Lacrosse season award winners. With an 18-0 record and coming off their sixth straight ACC Championship, the Tar Heels won four of the five awards: Jamie Ortega (Attacker of the Year), Ally Mastroianni (Midfielder of the Year), Emma Trenchard (Defender of the Year) and Jenny Levy (Coach of the Year). Virginia attacker Rachel Clark was chosen ACC Freshman of the Year.
The awards were selected following a vote of the league’s nine head coaches.
Ortega, Mastroianni and Levy each repeated for their respective awards after winning the honors in 2021. Levy was named Coach of the Year for the third straight season (2019, 2021, 2022). Trenchard was selected as ACC Defender of the Year for the second time (2019).
Ortega owns 60 goals, an ACC-best 38 assists and 98 points this season. She ranks second in the ACC in scoring at 5.44 points per game. A First-Team All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament Team honoree, she is one of 25 national nominees for the 2022 Tewaaraton Award. Ortega owns an ACC-record 451 career points (second in NCAA history), with 325 goals and 126 assists.
Mastroianni was a 2022 First-Team All-ACC honoree and is a 2022 Tewaaraton Award nominee. She also was named to the 2022 ACC All-Tournament Team. The graduate student owns 40 goals and eight assists this season. Mastroianni also has picked up 18 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers.
The linchpin in UNC’s stingy defense, Trenchard was a First-Team All-ACC honoree for the third straight season and is a nominee for the 2022 Tewaaraton Award. The graduate defender also was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team. She spearheaded a UNC defense that has allowed just 155 goals (8.5 per game), fewest in the ACC.
Clark was the lone student-athlete to earn spots on both the All-ACC First Team and All-Freshman Team this season. She also earned a spot on the ACC All-Tournament Team and is Virginia’s first Freshman of the Year honoree since Sammy Mueller in 2017. Clark led all ACC freshmen and tied for third in the league in goals per game at 3.33. She has 60 goals, tied for fourth most in the league.
Levy was voted the ACC Coach of the Year for the sixth season in her career after guiding top-ranked and unbeaten North Carolina to its sixth straight ACC Championship title and the top seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. UNC’s 18 consecutive ACC tournament wins (2016-22) stands as the longest streak in conference history. Now in her 27th season, Levy ranks first all-time among ACC women’s lacrosse coaches with 391 career wins.
