GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke’s Jameson Kavel has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and headlines the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team announced Friday.
A graduate student from Duluth, Georgia, Kavel is pursuing a graduate degree in management studies. She concluded her collegiate career with one of the strongest offensive seasons in Duke program history. Kavel hit .379 to rank among the top 10 in the ACC with 17 home runs, which led the conference. She also tallied 49 RBI, 16 doubles and 15 stolen bases, while starting all 55 games for the Blue Devils.
Kavel set the Duke single-season record in hits (66), runs scored (59), home runs and doubles en route to claiming National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America and First Team All-ACC honors.
The graduate student had several standout moments during the season, including a record-setting three-home run performance in a win over James Madison on April 12 and a 23-game on-base streak. Kavel hit the clinching two-run double to seal a run-rule win for Duke over Georgia to advance to the program's first NCAA Super Regional. Kavel is the Blue Devils’ all-time leader in games played, games started, at bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, stolen bases and walks.
Kavel is also the first Duke student-athlete to be named ACC Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She earned All-ACC Academic Team honors for the third time in her career.
Duke and Clemson led the league with eight student-athletes each on the academic team, followed by ACC regular-season champion Virginia Tech with six. Louisville, North Carolina and Virginia each placed five players on the team, while ACC Champion Florida State and Georgia Tech had four selections apiece. Syracuse had three honorees, followed by Boston College, NC State and Pitt each with two.
Four members of the All-ACC Academic team were named NFCA All-Americans and 30 earned All-ACC distinction.
Duke’s Peyton St. George earned the honor for the fourth time, while teammates Deja Davis, Kristina Foreman and Kavel, along with Notre Dame’s Emma Clark, Alexis Holloway and Payton Tidd claimed the recognition for the third time.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
