GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke sophomore forward/midfielder Shakur Mohammed and Wake Forest sophomore forward Roald Mitchell were named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Pitt freshman defender Jackson Gilman and Wake Forest junior defender Garrison Tubbs were chosen the league’s Co-Defensive Players of the Week.
Mitchell scored four goals and added an assist in No. 4 Wake Forest’s wins over Winthrop (5-1) and NC State (2-0) last week as the Demon Deacons upped their record to an unblemished 5-0. In the victory over Winthrop, the Montclair, New Jersey, native recorded his first career hat trick and also logged an assist on the game-winning goal. His seven points were the most by a Demon Deacon since Michael Gamble had nine against VMI in 2014. It was the first multi-goal game of his collegiate career. In the win over NC State on Saturday night, Mitchell registered the game-winning goal in the 15th minute on a penalty kick.
Mohammed scored the game-winning goal and assisted on another score in the No. 7 Duke’s 2-1, come-from-behind win at No. 10 Louisville on Saturday night. A native of Kumasi, Ghana, Mohammed played 82 minutes and was involved with both goals in the second 45 minutes of play. His second assist of the season helped level the score at 1-1 in the 54th minute, and he sent his third goal of the season into the back of the net in the 82nd minute. The sophomore already has matched his goal total from the 2021 season and has two game-winners on the year.
Gilman was a key figure as Pitt secured a pair of clean sheets in wins over Howard (5-0) and North Carolina (1-0). The native of Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, helped the Pitt defense hold the Bison to one shot on goal. On Friday night, Gilman again helped guide the Panthers’ defensive efforts as Pitt notched a road win over North Carolina, its first victory in Chapel Hill in program history. The freshman finished off his night with two shots on goal while defensively the squad held UNC to just two shots on goal. The Pitt defense now has a shutout streak of 243 minutes that spans to the first half of the Marshall game (Sept. 2). During the shutout streak, Pitt has allowed just four shots on goal.
A native of Brunswick, Georgia, Tubbs captained Wake Forest in wins over Winthrop and NC State. In the Demon Deacons’ victory over NC State, Tubbs guided a defensive effort that did not allow a Wolfpack shot on goal and surrendered just one shot on the night. The team also held reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week Conor Kelly, who was tied for the NCAA lead in goals (5), without a shot. It marked the second time in three matches Wake Forest did not allow a shot on goal as the Demon Deacons have allowed just two goals in five matches.
Non-conference play continues Tuesday with six ACC teams in action. At 8 p.m., NC State plays host to James Madison on ACC Network. All 12 teams will play league matches on Friday evening. The 7 p.m. match between No. 24 Syracuse and No. 1 Clemson will air on ACC Network.
