UNC’s Wood, Duke’s Tong Earn ACC Fencing Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina freshman Elden Wood has been selected the ACC Men’s Fencer of the Week, while Duke freshman Kunling Tong was named ACC Women’s Fencer of the Week in the first set of ACC weekly honors for the 2023 season.
 
Competing in sabre, Wood posted a 5-1 individual record while fencing against a pair of top-25 opponents at the Penn State Duals. A native of New York, New York, Wood was 3-0 in the Tar Heels’ dual with No. 5 Penn State and helped UNC to a 15-12 upset of the Nittany Lions. He followed it up by going 2-1 against second-ranked Columbia.
 
A native of Marietta, Georgia, Tong totaled a 16-3 record while competing in sabre at the Penn State Duals. The Blue Devils won four of their six team duals, including wins over three ranked opponents, No. 8 Penn, No. 11 Temple and No. 12 Yale. She was 3-1 in the Yale dual and posted 2-1 records against Penn and Temple. Tong went 3-0 in each of the duals against No. 3 Columbia, No. 6 Penn State and Haverford.
