SOUTH BEND, Ind. (theACC.com) – Florida State run-ruled Virginia Tech, 9-1, in six innings to advance to its 25th appearance in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship game. The Seminoles will face the winner of Friday's second semifinal between No. 2 Duke and No. 3 Clemson.
Florida State tallied 11 hits on the day, including five doubles and a home run. The five doubles set a tournament record for most doubles in a single game by a team. The previous record had stood since 1997.
Two of the five doubles came in the first inning from Michaela Edenfield and Mack Leonard. Devin Flaherty added a RBI single that gave the Seminoles a 4-0 lead heading into the second.
Kalei Harding hit the Seminoles’ third home run of the tournament, driving in two runs to give FSU a 6-0 lead.
Virginia Tech’s Addy Greene hit her second homer of the tournament to get the Hokies on the board, but Florida State added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure its appearance in the title game in a quest for their 19th ACC Championship title.
ACC Pitcher of the Year Kathryn Sandercock pitched all six innings for the Seminoles, striking out six. She allowed one run on three hits and improved to 22-3 on the season.
