SOUTH BEND, Ind. (theACC.com) – Florida State took home its 19th ACC Championship title in dramatic fashion with a walk-off single from Bethany Keen in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Seminoles topped Duke, 2-1, at Melissa Cook Stadium on Saturday.
Saturday marked Florida State’s second-ever walk-off to capture the title and the Seminoles’ second consecutive ACC Championship title; FSU walked off Pitt in 2018 to win the championship. The 2023 Championship also marks the Seminoles’ eighth in the last nine tournaments.
Florida State struck first in the third inning when Jahni Kerr stepped up to the plate with two outs and doubled to left field, scoring Kaley Mudge to make it a 1-0 ballgame.
Duke evened the score in the fifth inning with two outs when Kamryn Jackson scored on a passed ball.
In the seventh inning with two outs, Devyn Flaherty singled up the middle to get on base. Still with two outs, Keen’s RBI-single proved to be the difference. On the first pitch, the first baseman placed it short into left field and watched Flaherty race home to score the winning run.
In front of a sold-out crowd and the second largest crowd in ACC Championship history, ACC Pitcher of the Year and Tournament MVP Kathryn Sandercock earned the win in the circle and is now 23-3 overall. She tallied five strikeouts and allowed only one run on two hits in a complete-game effort.
