Florida State and Virginia Set for 2024 Men's Tennis Championship

CARY, N.C. (theACC.com) - Florida State and Virginia will battle for the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Championship after each collected wins during Saturday's semifinals at the Cary Tennis Park. The championship match is slated for 10 a.m. Sunday, April 21, on ACC Network Extra.

Sunday’s Championship match will mark Virginia’s fourth-straight appearance, while Florida State makes its second appearance in program history and first since 2005 when FSU was defeated by UVA, 4-1. The Cavaliers look to retain the ACC title for a third-straight season and their 12th in the last 15 years.

Top-seeded Virginia grabbed a 4-1 win over No. 8 seed Duke, as No. 4 Chris Rodesch clinched the match in three sets over the Blue Devils' No. 22 Garrett Johns, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

No. 6 seed Florida State upset No. 2 seed Wake Forest, 4-3, staving off a three-point comeback from the Demon Deacons. The Seminoles grabbed the early 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point, and quickly took a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win from Alex Bulte on Court 6 over WF's Jamieson Nathan. FSU's No. 5 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc pushed the lead to 3-0 with a straight-set 7-5, 6-4, win over No. 31 Fillippo Moroni.

With a pair of Demon Deacons leading in the third set on Courts 4 and 5, Matt Thompson on Court 3 gave Wake Forest a fighting chance by winning a tiebreaker in the second set, 7-6 (7-4). No. 111 Luciano Tacchi put the Deacs' first point on the board with a three-set, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over FSU’s Youcef Rihane on Court 4, while Wake’s Holden Koons cut into the lead to make it 3-2 with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 comeback victory over Josh Dous-Karpenschif on Court 5. DK Suresh Ekambaram tied it up 3-3 for Wake Forest with a 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 comeback victory over Loris Pourroy.

Thompson’s comeback fell just short on Court 3, as FSU’s Jamie Connel clinched the match for the Seminoles, 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, to secure his team’s spot in the championship match.
