CARY, N.C. (theACC.com) - Florida State men's tennis won its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference title on Sunday defeating Virginia, 4-3, with Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc clinching the match for the Seminoles in what was their second appearance in the championship final in program history at the Cary Tennis Park.
The sixth-seeded Seminoles won four matches in four days to become the lowest seed in league history to win the 2024 ACC Men's Tennis Championship.
The No. 1 seed Cavaliers clinched the doubles point over the No. 6 seed Seminoles with wins on Courts 1 and 2. UVA's No. 12 Inaki Montes and James Hopper blanked No. 27 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Josh Dous-Karpenschif, 6-0, but FSU's Alex Bulte and Jamie Connell evened the score at 1-1 with a 6-2 win over Alex Kiefer and Dylan Dietrich.
Virginia's No. 62 Chris Rodesch and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg clinched the point for the Cavaliers, defeating No. 79 Loris Pourroy and Youcef Rihane, 6-3.
The only straight-set matches of the final came from Courts 3 and 5. Kiefer gave Virginia a 2-0 lead with a straight-set win over Dous-Karpenschif, 6-2, 6-3, on Court 5, while Connell gave FSU its first point to cut the lead in half 2-1, with a 6-4, 7-6 (7) win over No. 51 Jeffrey von der Schulenburg.
Dylan Dietrich pushed the lead to 3-1 for the Cavaliers with a three-set 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Rihane on Court 3 and Pourroy kept the Seminoles fighting after defeating UVA's No. 36 Inaki Montes 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 on Court 2 to make it 3-2.
Bulte evened the score up for FSU on Court 6 with a 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 6-2, come-from-behind win to set Cornut-Chauvinc up with the chance he needed.
It all came down to the No. 1 position, where No. 5 Cornut-Chauvinc and No. 4 Chris Rodesch were in a battle after splitting the first two sets. Cornut-Chauvinc rallied from a 5-2 deficit to tie the set at 5-5.
