CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – No. 1 seed Virginia and No. 7 seed SMU advanced to the finals of the 2025 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship following semifinal action on Thursday, November 13 at First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.
Following a 2-1 win over No. 12 seed California on Thursday, Virginia will play in the ACC Championship Game for the first time since winning the title in 2019. SMU topped No. 6 seed Syracuse, 5-1, and will make its first-ever appearance in the ACC Championship Game. The Mustangs are looking for the school’s first ACC team championship in any sport.
The championship match is slated for Sunday, November 16, at 1 p.m. ET and will air on ESPNU.
Virginia (12-1-4) and SMU (10-4-4) played on October 31 in Dallas, Texas, in the regular-season finale, with UVA parlaying an 84th-minute goal from Bacary Tandjigora into a 1-0 victory.
In the first game Thursday, Virginia broke through in the 75th minute when Reese Miller sent a hard, low cross inside the six-yard box, and the ball caromed off a Cal defender and past goalkeeper Marco Brougher. The Cavaliers doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute when Marco Dos Santos beat Brougher to a ball and chipped it across to Ato Smith, who buried the shot into the open net for his third goal of the year.
Cal scored in the 87th minute when Beau Morrison headed in a rebound shot after it caromed off the post.
In the nightcap, SMU struck for three goals in a 12-minute span open up a close match and roll to the win. The Mustangs started the scoring in the 38th minute on a powerful goal from short range from Mukisa Emmanuel and scored again with just 50 seconds left in the half on a goal from Ryan Clanton-Pimentel. SMU came out fast in the second half, scoring off a corner kick in the 50th minute as a Stephan Soghomonian corner found Slade Starnes, who sent a short pass to Charles-Emile Brunet, who ripped a low shot to the corner of the net.
The Mustangs added a fourth goal in the 60th minute when Soghomonian finished to the near post off a perfectly-placed cross from Clanton-Pimentel. Landon Hickam capped SMU’s big night with a goal in the 83rd minute. Syracuse got on the board in the 85th minute on a penalty kick from Nathan Scott.
