ACC Announces Men’s Tennis Players of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State and Duke split the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Weekly Awards for matches played February 24 through March 2. The Wolfpack’s Luca Staeheli was named the Player of the Week, while teammate Jules Leroux was tabbed the Freshman of the Week.  Duke’s doubles team of Cooper Williams and Andreja Petrovic earned the Doubles Team of the Week honor, it was announced on Tuesday.
 
ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Luca Staeheli, Sr., NC State, Wollerau, Switzerland
Staeheli helped lead No. 10 NC State to a 3-0 record last week, including a pair of top-25 team wins in ACC play over No. 22 California and No. 6 Stanford.
 
In singles play, No. 107 Staeheli went 3-0 overall while competing for the Wolfpack on courts two and three on the week. The Wollerau, Switzerland, native posted a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win over John Gabelic of UNC Greensboro in a 7-0 non-conference midweek win before posting back-to-back conference wins over Cal and Stanford over the weekend.
 
Playing at the No. 3 flight versus No. 22 Cal, Staeheli recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 32 Theo Dean on Friday, February 28, before moving back up to the No. 2 flight to defeat No. 80 Max Basing of No. 6 Stanford 6-7 (2-7), 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) on Sunday, March 2.
 
In doubles play, Staeheli teamed with Leroux to go 2-0 on court two, with a 6-2 win over Andrew Black and Devon Moskowitz of UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, February 26, and a 6-4 triumph over Samir Banerjee and Alex Razeghi of Stanford on Sunday.
 
The second of their three doubles matches for the week, against No. 25 Dean and Carl Emil Overbeck of Cal, went unfinished, with the score tied at 6-6.
 
ACC Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Cooper Williams, So., Duke, New York, New York
Andreja Petrovic, Grad., Duke, Oslo, Norway
The doubles team of Williams and Petrovic went 2-0 last weekend, with both wins coming in ACC play to help the No. 15 Blue Devils achieve victories over No. 5 Virginia and No. 48 Virginia Tech.
 
In Duke’s 4-3 win over Virginia on Friday, Williams and Petrovic got the Blue Devils going with their first win of the day, a 6-3 win over No. 25 Dylan Dietrich and Mans Dahlberg on court number two.
 
The duo followed up that win with a 6-2 win over Virginia Tech’s duo of Ilyas Fahim and Scott Sculley in doubles play to help lead the Blue Devils to a 5-0 shutout win over the Hokies.
 
ACC Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week
Jules Leroux, R-Fr., NC State, Cannes, France
In addition to going 2-0 in doubles play alongside ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Staeheli, Leroux went 3-0 in singles play to help lead the Wolfpack to a 3-0 week overall.
 
In the midweek match versus UNC Greensboro, the Cannes, France, native scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over Andrew Black on court four. He carried over that momentum with a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set victory over No. 83 Derrick Chen over No. 22 Cal to clinch the match win over the Golden Bears on Friday and a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hudson Rivera of No. 6 Stanford in a 4-2 win on Sunday.
