GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia’s strong finish to the regular season carried over to the opening round of the 2025 Ally ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, March 5.
Sophomore guard Kymora Johnson scored 17 points and handed out seven assists as the 10th-seeded Cavaliers downed No.15 seed Pitt 64-50 at First Horizon Coliseum.
Breona Hurd added 15 points, while Latasha Lattimore had 12 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots for Virginia, which posted its fifth win in the last six games. Four of those victories have come away from home.
The Cavaliers (17-14) move on to face seventh-seeded California (24-7) in Thursday’s 5 p.m. ET second-round game. The Golden Bears won the regular-season meeting 76-70 on February 20 in Charlottesville.
Pitt graduate center Khadija Faye struggled through a 3-for-19 shooting afternoon but posted her 17th double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. MaKayla Elmore added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers (13-19).
Virginia, which shot 59.3 percent from the floor in the second half, limited Pitt to 23.3 percent for the game.
The Cavaliers improved to 38-43 all-time in the ACC Tournament, including a 13-23 mark in Greensboro and a 7-5 record in first-round games.
Pitt is 2-12 in ACC Tournament play. Wednesday’s outcome gave Virginia a sweep of its season series with the Panthers following the Cavaliers’ 80-67 road win on February 16.
