Cal Bears Are Golden in ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament Debut

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com)  – California’s first-ever Ally ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament game proved to be one Golden Bears’ fans will remember fondly.
 
Ugonne Onyiah and Marta Suarez each posted double-doubles of 16 points and 10 rebounds as Cal took control early to down Virginia 75-58 in the third game of Thursday’s second-round session at First Horizon Coliseum.
 
Lulu Twidale also scored 16 points for the seventh-seeded Bears, and Kayla Williams added 12. Cal, which shot 51 percent through the first three quarters, outrebounded the 10th-seeded Cavaliers 46-28 and had 19 assists on 28 field goals. 
 
Cal (25-7) sees its next tournament action versus No. 2 seed and nationally sixth-ranked Notre Dame (25-4) in Friday’s 5 p.m. quarterfinal game.The Fighting Irish won 91-52 when the teams met at South Bend on February 9.
 
The seventh-seeded Bears opened the game on a 9-0 run, built a 26-13 lead in the first 10 minutes and continued to pad their margin throughout the second and third quarters. A 10-0 run at the outset of the third period gave Cal its biggest lead at 51-25 (26 points). The Cavaliers rallied to within 69-56 (13 points) with 4:20 remaining in the game but could not get closer.
 
Virginia missed senior forward Latasha Lattimore, who left the game due to injury at the 9:03 mark of the second quarter and did not return. The Toronto, Ontario, native entered the game averaging 14.7 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.

The Cavaliers’ Kymora Johnson led all scorers with 21 points to go with a team-high eight rebounds. Paris Clark added 15 points and Breona Hurd scored 10.
 
The outcome left the Cavaliers with a 38-44 all-time record in the ACC Tournament, including a 13-24 mark in Greensboro, North Carolina.
