This Week in ACC Cross Country

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – This weekend, 11 Atlantic Coast Conference teams will compete in seven cross country meets. The 11 teams will be spread across the country, with meets in Virginia, Alabama, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, California and Texas. To kick off the weekend, eight teams will compete on Friday, September 12, while the other three will close out the weekend on Saturday, September 13.
 
On Friday, Virginia will host the Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville, Virginia, while Georgia Tech, Florida State, Miami, and Louisville will head to Huntsville, Alabama, to compete in the Southern Showcase hosted by Jacksonville State. The Southern Showcase will feature 49 teams in the women’s 5K and 47 teams in the men’s 8K. Additionally, Syracuse and Pitt will be in University Park, Pennsylvania, competing in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational hosted by Penn State. Lastly, staying in its home state, Wake Forest will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, to compete in the Queen City Invite hosted by Queens University.
 
On Saturday, Clemson will stay close to home in Greenville, South Carolina, to compete in the Furman Invitational. California will be in their home state, competing in Ceres, at the Kim Duyst Twilight Invitational hosted by Stanislaus State. Lastly, SMU will be in College Station, Texas, running at the Texas A&M Invitational.
 
Noting ACC Cross Country
  • In the USTFCCCA preseason coaches’ poll, the ACC led the nation in both men’s and women’s, with nine women’s teams from the ACC appearing in the organization’s top 30. The women’s poll is led by No. 3 NC State. Additionally, the ACC has six men’s teams that ranked in the preseason poll.
  • The ACC has a total of 15 ranked teams (nine women and six men), which is six more than any other conference. The ACC also has the most ranked teams in both genders. 
  • Reigning ACC champion, Wake Forest, was picked as the favorite in the ACC Cross Country Preseason Coaches’ Poll in the men’s category. NC State was picked as the favorite in the women’s category.
